Secret VIN Experiment

Looking for VIN naming convention for

: Mnarelli Safari

:AMF Minarelli V1

Example

ABCDEFGHIJKLMXXXX

Where XXXX IS the numeric unique identifier. If the alpha prefix varied by year show me the options. If this info is already on three web I haven't found it. Links are good too.

Re: Secret VIN Experiment

most of my pre-1982 mopeds just have a 7 digit serial number, they didn't go to the standardized 14 digit vin until post 82

just make up 7 numbers?

I'd make up numbers, slap some 7's and 6's in there in case they are like "Are you sure this is correct?"

You can be like oh wait, it was actually XX1XX6 instead of XX1XX8

I saw this earlier and yes, I can do any 7 digits. I just thought there was a standard alphabet prefix like Tomos, I think.

Not that I've ever seen .

And , I've never heard of the multiple 0 prefix not being accepted .

Re: Secret VIN Experiment

I have two Tomos that begin with ZZ1A and are 17 digit total. Puch 7 digit numeric. Sachs 9 digit numeric. Raven, 6 digit numeric. Jawa 17 digit, TLJ210 prefix.

I guess for old stuff a 7 digit numeric would work.

Anything pre-81 would not have a standardized VIN number

Re: Secret VIN Experiment

virginia DMV adds a letter to the end of the "vin" on old mopeds to make them unique. my 5 digit VIN search returned a title for a motorhome. now theres a "D" at the end of my vin on my title.

Re: Secret VIN Experiment

A friend shared a VIN for a Safari. 7 digit, XX XXXXX all numeric. I'm assuming the 81-82 Roadmaster would be 7 digit as well. Thanks all for the input.

I just sold a Cimatti City bike last week and it was a 7 digit numerical vin. The bike was made in 1977 FYI.

actually there is a method to the numbering mostly they start off with a country of origin code then a region code then company code then engine code then color so the older ones just had that series of numbers but once you've made millions of them you start running into the same numbers so they kept the same rhyming scheme in the beginning and then just added letters and then they added double sets like a 7 B 3 sort of like a hipster hexadecimal alphabet

Re: Secret VIN Experiment

I've got a bike from the 50's with a three digit vin.

Re: Secret VIN Experiment

Just for comparison , my '57 Simplex has an alpha numeric 7 digit VIN .

My malaguti which is still missing had a serial number of asterisk 1901

Re: Secret VIN Experiment

It would be nice to continue the VIN alpha/numeric number of digits correlating to year of manufacture. For instance, supposedly less than 7 digits till 1981. How many digits in 81-82? We're some still 7? Immediate change to 17? Just curious.

Some of us might want to come up with a VIN for a ped that has lost its foil ID plate using the original VIN of record or create one using an engine number.

I had the Florida DMV assign me a number but failed to supply an ID plate. Not sure if I can do this again or if I just got lucky.

The 17 digit VIN became mandatory in 1981 .
