A3-A35-A55

Ok, I did some WIKI reading and web searches before this ,so bear with me . I got a A3 1990 bullet. I want to do clutch work on it. I guess good cork is hard to find, also I read the steel on the clutches is probably bad also I don't know why. So A3 clutches are hard to find, but A35 & 55 's are everywhere. So I read these two are pretty much the same. So I went to Myrons Moped and that that 35 and 55 "bottom ends" have wider gears & clutches, bigger roller clutches. Am I missing something cause the parts sites seem to tell me the clutch kits are only A 35 - A55? Would the wider parts not fit?

A3 clutches are quite robust, have you had a look inside? Generally, people swap A3 clutches into a35 and a55, not the other way around. (edited)

Re: A3-A35-A55

You have to use A3 clutches. The a3 clutch shoes have smaller pins than the A35/A55. The hubs and bells will not interchange either. I'd disassemble the clutch an inspect all the pieces. If everything is in good shape except for the friction material you can re-bond the shoes yourself. If the slots in the hubs are worn or the pot metal shoes are fracturing you'll be better off finding good used parts.

Re: A3-A35-A55

That's why I didn't want to crack any thing open till I knew I could get NOS parts. Mine is running good. Hers, left the skid marks.

Re: A3-A35-A55

There's a nice looking used one on ebay right now, it's the early type with the hard fiber clutch pads, rather than the later cork type pads. If you want to search the internet for nos parts here are the numbers you might need. Roller clutch (035.504), clutch shoe (209.040), or for complete clutches "1st" (209.035), "2nd" (209.043), bronze bushing (209.072), side cover gasket (209.084), protective plate (209.074).

Re: A3-A35-A55

Sabbsonnettguy, appreciate the part numbers, will head to ebay!

Re: A3-A35-A55

All I could find was a rebuild service. Will try again. :/

Re: A3-A35-A55

Going to take this to repair...

Too bad you're so far away I just got my clutch tool from Tomas from treats just the other week I have a few pointers basically you just realign it you got to make sure when you clean the old surface you leave some of the goop from the old glue on there also you must coat the inner shoe with the glue that you're using you got to use you got to put it on right away because the shoe metal will oxidize and make the glue not stick so you want to rough it up really good and leave the glue residue on it from the old shoes it will actually make a stronger Bond on the metal that way I personally use Q Bond or J-B Weld Marine and I use Vibram rubber that you can get at a shoe shoe repair shop they'll cut it to the Right Strips eyes and when you layer it make sure there's a thick coat of glue under it because it will tell you when the shoes are worn out because it will really really really grab

Yep, any A3. Looks like someone already scooped this one up, it's sold.

what all do you exactly need I have a few a threes laying around here

Re: A3-A35-A55

Thanks Slew! But I found some! 8) Now to save for that clutch tool.

Re: A3-A35-A55

You don't need a clutch tool. You can use small c-clamps or just use your fingers.

Several zip ties and vise grips and it takes about a half-hour the hardest thing is to get the spring over the last cradle

Re: A3-A35-A55

Ok, I looked at a tutorial guy used 3 pair needle nose vice grips. BTW ,Slew what would you want for one of each.? Doesn't matter if they cork, I gotta start learning to rebuild them.

well another thing reaching into the dark arts of mopeds if you have a sax 505 clutch Bell it is the exact diameter that you need to stretch your clutch spring around the clutch Bell then using the gaps in the clutch Bell work the spring right over all the cradles at once saves a lot of time don't get your fingers caught in there I have a strips you can get it any Shoemaker just bring one of your shoes with you and the Bell so he knows how thick if you get the remember to leave enough room for glue right thickness it works beautiful
