Her Tomos left a skid mark...

Just got done cleaning her Tomos A3 fuel tank ,cleaned carb with new gaskets, New fuel line, and petcock. Proper fuel mix . I took it for a spin, ran good. Later that day she goes to take it out of her garage , she said it stops dead ,tire squeals, leaving rubber on her garage floor! The only thing I did different was use Shell premium in the tank. I'm thinking ,no hoping , it soft seized. I've read here, and there, to use hi test cause of ethanol. Was that wrong? BTW, I havent been able to check it out yet. Any thoughts?

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

High test never hurt any motor I ever ran it though .

And , your thread title had some strange images running through my head . LOL

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

Did she drop it off the stand with the rear wheel spinning?

I wouldn't doubt that it is trans related. I would check the one-way bearing in the clutch hub. I have had that go bad on A3's before and it locks the rear tire to cylinder movement.

No Tuck, she's a kickstarting woman.

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

Ok, Dirty just one question. I'm reading up on Tomos and it seems you need a lot of their tools for maintenance, is that your experience ,or am I over reading?

Overthinking it but honestly from the sound of it it sounds like it had a seal leak and it burned the bottom con rod bearing that would make it skid going from Full Speed to a for halt I almost dumped mine when it did it I was going about 35 then all of a sudden the rear wheel stopped spinning....

Ha . I don't understand some of what they say , either . LOL

But , to be clear , high test is high octane , relative to gasoline .

People who say ethanol don't matter never had anything with viton seals or viton needles as soon as viton hits ethanol it dissolves within a minute so I pop pop pulled out that old motobecane or even pook from the seventies and Jazz that all up and over did everything and then put ethanol gas in it it lasted less than a season it also holds its weight in water and can cause tank rust at the bottom also it can settle at the bottom of your car Bowl

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

BUT, as has been repeatedly shown here, ethanol is extremely easy to remove from gasoline at levels of 15% or lower. Easy Peesy. I do it all the time for all my small engines.

Go-kart racer was telling me how he used to do the water trick to separate ethanol from gasoline but it doesn't work anymore. He figures they're adding some sort of (emulsifier?) to the mix.

Well, if they can do that, I'll have to perform my own test. The last time I separated it, it was Marathon gas in Jacksonville area, and they are known for adding less ethanol than the others.

So my result was less volume change at the water line. I will have to look into this.

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

Slew, she never made it out of the garage, not to say that's not what happened,is that a bearing your talking about? BTW, I know what high test is, I checked a download one of the members mentioned. It shows locations in Ohio the still sell leaded gas. None in Youngstown thou.

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

Well, I'VE never seen LEADED gas for sale.....I thought it was outlawed?

Yeah it sounds like a lower connecting rod bearing but it could just be the clutch all seized up

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

ya gotta check it out yourself, throttle probably didnt twist back.

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

Your right Pat, gonna check it Monday..

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

My bad on leaded gas, boy oh boy, I'm such an as! The list was for ETHANOL free gas. My senior moment, more to come! ;)

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

Join the club,Les! LOL!

Re: Her Tomos left a skid mark...

I ran across ethanol free gas at a Murphy's station in Dexter , Missouri a couple days ago .

Just in case anyone might be in that area for whatever reason . ;)
