We had the pleasure to check out the ONYX moped. Super fast bike!
What's your thoughts on electric stuff?
Its the future, will inevitably replace these dinosaurs we ride that are already dinosaurs. Battery life and size are all that hold them back right now.
I actually purchased a 2010 Tomos Streetmate to convert to an EV after reading about the ONYX, FLY FREE and of course, ZERO bikes. They look like a TON of fun! 8hp and 120 ft/lb of torque and 150 mile/gallon equivalent! Sign me up! I'm only getting into mopeds because of the electric (stealthy quiet) models that are coming out :)
as long as the antique (vintage) gas misers are still grandfathered in to our way of life.
being equivalent is all fine...but i know how to work on one but not the other.
I'd definitely put an engine on one those... If they have the charge while you pedal thing then that'd be neat
Yeah, nothin wrong with them except it's needed to be put in OFF TOPIC. Won't you guys ever learn we're a TRUE 2 stroke/4 stroke moped/noped site in Gen. Discussion?

Agreed. This is a still born child. You're trying to capitalize on a trend. (edited)
Quit trying to sell your wares here wares salesman (edited)
Laws and regulations will catch up with having this much fun is my prediction. I like the ONYX bikes but don't get the same feeling about electric stuff although it is the "future" of mopeds. That being said it won't kill the 2stroke scene, only make it stonger as these become more popular or the government regulates them to death.
^, this, way too much fun for the government to ignore! When the prices come down, I would rock an electric bike for sure.
These look like a lot of fun, especially since the battery technology is better, and regenerative braking, too? That’s cool. I’ll wait for these things to come down to the same prices as a new Tomos or Bye Bike. (edited)
It looks pretty wel built but i really dislike the gynormous white triangle. 60 is damn fast, how long does it take to drain the battery when youre in sportsmode?
still too expensive for me. I don't buy alotta new stuff anyeway for that reason, but worse is that Iprobably won't be able to buy em cheap used either, since they batteries are the expensive part and they're the part thats gonna be shit in the end
yeah it's pretty neat, but where do I get an OEM or perfect fit drop in replacement battery in 30 years?
You guys spend all your time on DIY bikes and you don't think you'll be able to find a battery that fits in 30 years? In 30 years you can probably just strap the new tiny battery to the handle bars and be on your way lol. Also, custom built batteries are easy, inexpensive and get cheaper by the day.
lol
new battery tech will hit the market by the time you need to replace this one
Also batteries are already basically OEM parts now if you know the business
I guarantee I know more about batteries than anyone in this thread, but its easy to learn. I just see a lot of misinformation posted here
They're all just stacks of vape batteries right?

They make a version with black panels. ;)

I liked the video Pete. Thought it was pretty informative. I wouldn't mind having an electric back up bike for those days when you have had enough trouble shooting an air leak or no spark issues. Something to just grab and ride to take off the stress before getting back at it. I really like the Onyx bikes look compared to others out there such as the Monday. For me the Monday is a bit bulky on the top and to "modern" in its over all styling. I prefer the more classic moped look of the Onyx.
Oh yea absolutely, I work on the chemistry side of battery materials too. It's just the cost side of things that gets me. Like half the bike's cost or more is just the batteries, and theyre a limited lifetime part.
But then again, you give the batteries a "lifetime" of 5 years, they'd be considered not good, but should still manage 50-80% capacity, that's still plenty. and for sure theyre getting more available and cheaper, especially as demand goes up = economy of scale. in 5 years you can make a replacement battery fit in there and have bonus power to boot. And that's definitely a BENEFIT here too - theyre pretty modular and upgradable the way mopeds are. Get a kit, later get a bigger carb and intake - electrics maybe you boost voltage or swap a new controller, dissipate heat better or add gearing somewhere.
It's important for context though, I'm not trying to spend money on nice things. this i'd definitely call a nice thing. But like I still got an iPhone4...
Will, I can totally understand cost but I felt that same way about the 2017/18 Tomos models also. They were 1800/2200 when they came out. Its hard to compare that to the 600/700 dollar vintage bikes. Sticker shock is just going to have to be a thing until these things reach 40 years old also. For reference I am still running a 2014 Nexus 6. :D
haha they are lithium battery cells staked like car batteries. electric is the future for replacing two strokes.....they are light motors & are able to run in any position great for replacing weed wackers and chain saws unlike 4 strokes. only thing that can make them even better is that they give out full power at any rpm.
yea they need to work on the battery but ever time we make a better battery it just gets more expensive. everyone still uses acid battery in their cars because liuthuim cost $300 plus. maybe if we invested all our time, we could make a better, more affordable, smaller, lighter battery but there is so much else that it would effect. no more war,no more gas station but it would open alot of new jobs and we could go from saying how much hp to how many watts (edited)
its not even the time thing
Lithium-Ion is pretty stable, its the charge/discharge cycles that get you and if you have any passive drains on them (a good BMS will drain maybe 0.1%-1% every 6 months or so)

747 watts = 1 hp :)
"You can't really buy them any more since they were limited run."??? OYNX has them listed at $3,600.00, So they must be trying to get shipping back on it for the 4999 they asking for?

No it's $300-$400 if you live in the United States
