Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

78 Swinger 2 . Got it with 400 miles on it , now has 1000. Everything original except for rebuilding the carb, petcock chains tubes and tires coil .

My Swinger was making a ticking noise recently, and I thought I needed an oil change, but then it quit on me in the rain. I thought it might be BC the rain, but when it dryed it ran but without much power. I pulled the head and then cylinder off. So the piston and rings look shot, but the inside of the cylinder looks like it was nicked by the rings, I guess Ill just get the $114 treats 70cc V1 kit BC I don't think this cylinder is any good anymore. I am running a Bing 14 with bigger Jets.. everything else is stock.. Hopefully I can use the stock setup with this kit.

So I was wondering, I usually add 2 cap fulls of Lucas 2 stroke oil to my gallon of gas. Is that enough? Maybe this is what shredded the rings and piston>?

When I pulled the oil drain plug it seems that not enough oil came out, but the bottom end wasn't making any funny noises when i got it to run with the bad piston, it just didn't have much power. So for now I'm just going to rebuild the top end and hopefully it will get me down the road cause I'm missing my baby!

2 cap fulls of 2 stroke oil per gallon is almost definitely not enough. Unless you're using a huge cap I guess.

The Cup that is attached to the gas cap.. Not the cap on the bottle..

Oh, that makes a lot more sense haha. I don't know the size of the cup on the Swinger, but on Hobbits it's 0.068 ounces so I always add 4 caps/gallon.

I would start running more oil/gallon, especially when you put on a kit. (edited)

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

Might fatten the carb up too.

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

If you pull in the starter clutch lever while the cylinder is off, do you notice the piston / crank conrod shifting to the left at all?

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

Those open port stock top ends are pretty cheap and not hard to find. It probably wouldn't be a terrible idea to do bearings and seals at this point, especially if you plan to kit it.

Wow nice photography with depth of field and everything. Good lighting too. I assume it's a phone camera. Good phone.

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

Some more pics of the blue cub. It looks minty fresh. Does it run?

amsol synthetic smokeless...

do u have any near u?

iv'e had great luck with mine.

50/1 ratio, i run @ 40/1 for my moby.

no smoke after 1 min warm up

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

I pulled the piston off and it does not seem to move left..In fact it moves super smooth...i ordered the kit from Treats... ill put it together and let you know..i assume fattening the carb means getting a larger jet to fuel the larger displacement...I bought a jet kit party from Treats s while back so hopefully my odd 60s will be enough...

Yes there is an Amsoil dealer nearby ill check that out..

How many gas cap cups do you guys normally run per gallon? Thats my only thing i can go by right now...

Also do these bikes eat spark plugs? TIA

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

If it the stock carb I think I went up three on the jet size then backed down one. with the 15mm bing clone from treats I went up one from what the carb came with. I dont remember the jet size but you can look here for great info.

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

The cub is my girlfriends. Its an 82 12v CDI Passport. 2.75 rear 2.50 Sava MC 51 tires from Treats..I have to rebuild the squishy front suspension and the semi automatic trans is wonky..but its a fun little thing! Ill have to post pics tomorrow...

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

Dan, Buy a ratio rite cup so you can mix consistently, they're less than $10

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

all this oil talk is BS... that failure isn't from lubrication, its obviously from some kinda chunk of something ending up in your engine. maybe the clunky noises were from it banging around in there.

if it were me, i'd at the very least split the cases, put new seals on the crank and replace the clutch side bearing... very least... if you want to invest another whopping $6 you can buy a magneto side bearing too!

much easier to split it now and make sure you got all the junk outta there, never know if more chunks of metal are floating around ready to ruin your day again.

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

A picture of the top of the piston would show if something got sucked into the intake.

Also a full rebuild would be a very good ideal. (edited)

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

I agree with Graham. You sucked something in there. Split the cases and make sure it's not still in there to cause more damage to whatever new cylinder you put on.

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

Well It looks like I might go that route because I broke the ring trying to get it in the cylinder... Since its out of commission until I get another set of rings maybe I will .. Thanks for all the advice.. Do I need to go with the high end stuff or just the regular stuff...

Re: Swinger not swinging.. My First Post

high end stuff meaning bearings and seals? they are like 6 bucks for reputable NTN or SKF bearings so yes, don't go any cheaper than that.
