A55 clutch bell/housing

Hello there, I'm tearing down an a55, my first try. I saw on Wiki a reference to an "out of round" clutch bell. This one is shaped like an egg. I have the means to fix it. My question is... what causes this to happen?..or did they come that way? Or whatever...a35 round, a55 not. I wanna Kno why??!!!;?

Re: A55 clutch bell/housing

bad production quality. i've found taking weight off the heavy-thicker side by drilling holes does wonders for numb hand syndrome. better than thinning bell to weakness.

So you balance the bell insted of rerounding it?

Re: A55 clutch bell/housing

if yours is real bad... like.. visibly bad... best you just replace it. The a35 ones will pop right on and they are much much better.

i don't think its worth trying to fuck with just because a new one is so cheap and its such shitty thin metal there isn't much you can do to straighten it out.

check that the countershaft gear castings are machined true as well, i've seen a couple of them that were way off.

yeah, as simple as it is, it took me forever to figure out. i chuck it up in a 1/2 drill and start drilling holes or taping on washers to add weight....when the inner rim of the clutch stops wiggling i know its good. be careful not to drill out the spot welds.

Re: A55 clutch bell/housing

If it's far out of round the clutch pads are going to grab weird, no matter how balanced it is
