New Honda Super Cub.....

Not exactly a moped, but several people here have the vintage version of this reincarnated Honda Cub. Pictured below is my niece at the NYC Motorcycle Show this past weekend. The new Honda Cub is 125cc, 4-speed semi automatic (no clutch, foot shifted), Fuel injected, disc brakes. MSRP is around $3600. I think I'll wait for the secondary market when people stop riding them and re-sell them for cheap.

thought it felt really cheap. I was more impressed with the monkey

The new cub is cool, not specifically because of the great market shift it could mean in the future.

The US has always lagged behind on small displacement motos compared to Europe and Asia. It would be great to see some non-Grom clone bikes on the market.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

Don't know if I'd trade my old 71 classic for one of those? Maybe they look better in Red or yellow or the original blue..Don't like that blue.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

if the motor is similar to the 10+ hp grom, that could be a real winner.

i like the 81 but real suspension, disk brakes and a bit more oomph (65 mph) would make it a real winner.

i dunno, without seeing it IRL its tough to say but 3600 doesn't seem like a crazy price... of course I've seen the 250 rebel at the dealer for 3400 so you gotta wonder who is gonna make that choice.

of course the grom turned out to be a hit and i never would have called that one.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

As long as it's not cheap Chinese junk it should be worth the price.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

I think it's a great move,

1) it opens up to a whole different market, allowing people otherwise I intimidated by motorcycles to get into it, and probably in many cases feel a little underwhelmed after a while, introducing new people to the market, where theres little competition, and being first in that niche will def help their image and likely inspired strong brand loyalty as people move bigger.

2nd, it's a great AND bike, as in, you can buy a giant harley cruiser or a big honda cruiser, but you could have either AND a handy in town bike like that cub.

I think they look great, probably a pretty perfect fit, but yeah, I'm not a buyer of new vehicles 3ver, especially not motorcycles so, I'm out. I do love a cub and look forward to riding with some folks on em if they become more popular

Yep after they buy one on impulse and then they only ride it for a few hundred miles then let it sit for a few years then won’t start,

Buy for cheep, give the carburetor a good cleaning and go

LOL, what carburetor?

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

Like that a lot, slam shift kind of sucks, but what are you going to do? I hope these do become popular, I wonder if they will sell the electric version? $3600, is expensive, but by today's pricing of everything not at all out of line. Like you, I will wait for used ones to come up for sale.

Ya clean Fuel injector, fuel system

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

When has anyone ever had to clean a fuel injector on a 300 mile anything. I bet it's hardly a slam shift anymore. I'm sure honda has perfected the auto clutch by this point, honda offers a few models with the option of auto clutch now. (edited)

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

we're talking about a modern rehash of the best small engine 4 stroke on the market, by the guys who made the motor, but with 60+ years more experience and millions more dollars and modern technology. like Honda is pretty on point with their shit, the cub is the most produced vehicle of all time, the motor is STILL the most copied motor and clones are on literally everything in the <150cc markets pitbikes and dirtbikes and motorized bicycles and atvs, clones of a 60 year old motor with very few modifications. cub is fucking legit. these bikes will kick ass. whether they sell? hard to say. it'd be cool to own a "new 1st" gen "1st" year one though...

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

They would destroy their own scooter market if they were any cheaper. I bet they will sell, especially in metro areas, in seattle they're building 100 unit apartment building with 10 parking spots.

Take an old cub add a bunch of emissions hoses, wiring, fuel injection, and relays and an ecu that is likely to go out and you have a new super cub.

I prefer the old version with stone reliability. I would say honda had to submit to the times and install all the crap due to emissions, but then you see that they added even more crap in the form of wireless unlocking and such.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

That's a tough price when you can get the old ones from anywhere between $500 - $1700, or 350 cc bikes in that price range as well.

Really? Like all those groms you hear about with 'ECU's going out'

These things will be rock solid. The grom motor is pretty seriously dialed in. When has anyone had to 'Clean an EFI' system... i have a '99 subaru in my driveway right now that has sat for the last 3 years under a tree, fixed the spark plug wire and fired up first kick. The fuel systems are sealed and made of ethanol compliant materials.

I think ultimately at the 3500-5k price point, electrics will be taking over very soon but its nice to see honda putting some effort behind what will probably be the last iteration of this venerable design.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

also, i buy 500-1000 dollar cars, why on earth does anyone pay 50k+ for a new one?!?!

I don't think I want a Subaru if I have to kick start it . Seems a bit Flintstoneish . ;)

As for the last iteration , There's way too much fossil fuel left . There will be more .

I had an ECU, and Fuel Pump go out on an 07 Metropolitan...the electric stuff will never be as reliable and easy to fix like to old stuff, the tradeoff is the engine may see a little more raw gas than with injection therefore the engine may wear out sooner.

No more cleaning the tank and carb, and filing the points after sitting in a garage 20 years, the new ones would be an expensive cluster fuck compared to the old stuff.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

I am glad they went with the 125,the 110 probably just a little too small anymore for plus plus sized americans, imagine what you could pack on this one if you can haul everything on a 50cc. 125 seamed to be the bike of choice in the phillipines for taxis around the local area and you could haul like 7 people on those.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

Graham said it best when he mentioned that the future is electric. The new Honda's are amazing though.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

Things are going electric but it's good to be Diversified with a small gas-powered rig especially if you live out in the Sticks where there's not an charging outlet on every tree

Not sure but I think they call that a motorcycle!

If these do become the “toy shoved in the corner of the garage and forgotten” like many mopeds did, the missing electronic key will render them useless.

Making it different than any other toy with a newer chip key? It can be replaced just as easily, if not more expensive. I would wager that they have a backup hard key as well. My car has one, albeit inside the fob itself.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

Electric for everyday use and the common user is a LONG WAY off. Don't kid yerselves………………………... Gasoline is here to stay.

Re: New Honda Super Cub.....

I disagree, especially in the small bike class, in reality it may attract new blood, as most people are turned off by greasy oily machines, they are used to the pretty little light in their hands, the cars will take longer, especially in extreme climates, but I swear I see more Tessla's every day. I would buy an electric Cub in a heartbeat, Vespa is making an electric version of its scooter as well. Battery tech is evolving quickly as there is an economic incentive to do so.
