Motobecane shock dismantling

I'm trying to refurb a set of old Motobecane rear shocks / shrouded springs. Has anyone ever dismantled one of these? I attempted to unscrew one of these but it didn't come apart. I did notice that heat started to build up on the shroud as the assembly came tight and rolled over, but the assembly never released or expanded. What's holding the thing together?

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

Ive never seen a rear shocks that can be taken apart

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

How'd they get put together? I don't see any welds or rivets. Some kind of machine or hydraulic press that knocked a knuckle into place or something?

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

Correct.

Non serviceable throw away.

I dismantled the shocks on a VLX with the chrome springs. Had to build a rig to compress the shock be very careful there is some sort of snap ring that holds it together!

So, they can be rebuilt?

This type yes never did the other type. But I think if it was put together it can come apart!

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

Yeah, these are totally different (pic). I'm not putting them back on the moped, wanted to use them for something else so I'm not gonna pitch em. Dismantling was only to make cleaning easier and give me access to clean the spring and underneath the shroud.

Thanks for the assistance

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

If you're going to pitch your old shocks, dissect one so we can see how they're assembled.

Here's instructions on how to disassemble external spring rear shocks. I put this together about 6 months ago.

Pic 1. I placed the lower body of the shock in a vice. Using wood on each side of the shock to protect the paint from getting scratched. You also have to be careful of the pressure applied so you don’t collapse the shock body. Next unscrew the lower eyelet.

Pic 2. Compress the spring. I bought this tool on Ebay for $37, free shipping. Made by Tusk. I'm sure one can be made cheaper.

Pic 3. You can see in this photo the play in the eyelet rod as the spring is being compressed. This is all the spring needs to be compressed.

Part 2 in my next post.

Pic 4. In the lower shock body is a 13mm nut. Using a holding tool of type (screw driver) unscrew the nut. The coil spring MUST remain compressed until the nut is taken off. Next I loosened the spring compressor.

Pic 5. Here is the shock completely disassembled, all parts shown.

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

Your pics don't show a shroud. Waz there one on there before you started taking the thing apart?

I appreciate the info. I only have two and don't really want to sacrifice one.... I'd be happy using them in their current state. I will however try disassemble as you described in your tut. I'll post what luck.

Thanks again.

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

No dice. I hit it with a torch and a chain wrench but all she did was spin. Quite a few full revolutions but no linear expansion/separation. I think that the ones in your tut are different from mine. If you look at my shocks, there's a ring at each end, probably some kind of compression ring. It was probably popped into place with a press.

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

Never heard of a VLX moped.

Motorcycle shocks are a bit different than moped shocks.

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

JD, I believe your shocks are not serviceable. The eyelet caps on each end are machine welded.

Re: Motobecane shock dismantling

Thanks for the info. No sweat. I was just trying to do a more invasive cleaning, happy with what I have as they are.

Cool so there is a vlx moped.

And there are some moped shocks that can be taken apart too.

i know this is an old thread but i want to know if the shrouded type can be dismantled. if i grasp the top and bottpm eyelets i can twist and unscrew them until an oring snags against the top shroud. is it seized? if it turned would i be able to unscrew them completely?

ive been told to unscrew them pack them with grease and screw them back up.
