How do I unrestrict my Kymco People 50

Hi everyone,

I just bought a Kymco 2002 people 50. The stock version restricts the top speed to 30-35mph. What would you recommend to INCREASE the speed? If you know any good parts vendor that would be helpful too.

Thanks in advance!

The restriction is in the variator.

Go to the dealer and buy a smooth variator tube. The stock ones have a step at the end which prevents movement over the full range.

After that get an exhaust pipe from 50cc.nl

I just order what my dealer called a "boss clutch". Basically a smooth variator tube. Thanks for the info.

Would you install this immediately or wait for the break-in period (say around 500km)?

I don't know much about your Scooter, but those are the best looking scooters out....I love those big wheels!

In your carb there is a main jet. It's usually right in the center of the carb, if you take off the bowl and look at the bottom of the it. Moped manufacturers put in small jets and restrictive airboxes to keep the speed around 30....another instance of the man bringing us down.

Re: How do I unrestrict my Kymco People 50

What you do is....Buy some bigger jets for your carb. Then put the biggest one in, and run your scoot without the airbox You buy a couple because it's trial and error. If it's running too rich, then go down a jet size, until your plug chops are golden brown. Then you have to modify your airbox for zero restriction, without effecting the filter...it still has to catch the dirt. Now your 50cc is running at it true full power! Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for the info Crisis. I'll probably replace the exhaust before messing with the carb.

How much did the variator tube cost? I'm just curious

You might want to install it after you've broken the bike in.

It won't make a difference if you install it during the break in period, but you should still keep it to the recommended speed. That may be tough without restriction.

When you get the thing in, and you might want to have the dealer do it if you aren't mechanically inclined. Also post your top speed derestricted.

I'm getting the variator tube from www.scootertherapy.com, the folks there are extremely helpful. They reply to email in 5 minutes (maybe I was lucky).

They're delivering it to the door for $22.00.

Also the website has detail instructions on how to install it: http://www.scootertherapy.com/bosspage.html

The scooter therapist quoted a top speed of "50mph" with installation and said "I would do it now, since without it the engine is always revving very high anyways."

I also spoke with a mechanic there and he basically said "This is the best bang for you buck". Other modifications include changing exhaust, carb, cylinder, clutch, belt, etc...

Has anyone replaced the variator tube (clutch boss - http://www.scootertherapy.com/bosspage.html) for a kymco?
