problems getting my garelli to start

Looking for a little advice here, cant seem to get my garelli to want to start or stay running. I've replaced a bunch of parts on it recently to replace things that were missing/damaged.

so far here is what has been replaced on it:

new petcock/filter

cleaned the tank

dellorto 14/12 carb

new clutch setup

new sparkplug

cleaned the muffler out

I have gotten it to run a few times, had an issue idling so that is why i just replaced the clutch.

yesterday when i was trying to get it started after finishing up the clutch, the only way it would really start is if i had the throttle wide open and even then if i closed the throttle it would slow down and die. it did seem to run better with the 15/15 clone carb that came with it, but it seems like that was just dumping more fuel into it. when i changed the plug you could just smell and see some fuel leftover.

anyone have any tips on what i can check/adjust? still learning a little and not sure what check next.

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

You have FRESH fuel mixed at 32:1 or up to 40:1 with quality 2-stroke oil?

Could be a very weak spark. Have you cleaned and reset the points? don-ohio

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

Wide open throttle and 'smell and fuel left over' says it's too rich .

Choke functioning correctly ?

Which jet size(s) ?

Air filter or no ?

Choke seems to be functioning like it should, and i believe that the 14/12 came with a 57 main, I haven’t touched the jets. Air filter is on, so its pretty much how it is out of the box.

I was thinking its running way too rich as well, i mean the idle screw is almost all the way out, and that leans it out at idle, right?

Edit: aaannnddd i feel like an idiot. I never thought to look into it until you asked about the jet, but it looks like, based off of the service manual that i found from martys, the jet size for the 25mph is only a 50. Would probably explain some things (edited)

The fuel is fresh and mixed 40:1.

And honestly, i dont know anything about the points and the electrical system on it, its on my “when it needs fixed I’m going to have to learn” list of things. So I wouldn’t know where to start there

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

With a newly acquired bike, the points are very important to check out. But that 57 jet is too much. Go to a 52 and try it. don-ohio

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

lotta times the tiny woodruff key that holds the magneto placed gets sheared throwing off timing. and the rest of tuning, and when it shears its a pita to remove.

cover airbox holes, start and run for a bit?

air leak!

Give this guy a try he got my garelli running after sitting for 10 year's. CT ped shed in Meriden CT 203-415-3621

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

while u doing the timing replace that seal behind the stator plate too, thats most likely yr issue.

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

Guess I’m about to jump into learning about timing and ignition. Have the correct size jet in the carb and I’ve still got nothing. Just seems weird that it ran without a carb when i bought it, but it doesnt seem to like having a carb.

Going to take a look at it tonight, does anyone have any tips on how to measure the gap? Read the service manual and I doubt i can eyeball .014 or whatever mm

You'll want a feeler gauge .

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

Well borrowed a feeler gauge from the shop at work, set the points to spec, and I was able to get it to idle for a brief second, then it died under throttle.

So now I’ve:

Put the proper jet in and tried other sizes

New spark plug that’s gapped correctly

Replaced the clutch setup

New fresh fuel

Set the points to spec

And nothing. It’s funny, the closer I get it to back to what the factory service manual says, the farther from running I seem to get.

I originally was going to get it running then go for a bigger cylinder, new head and other stuff to get some speed out of it. Now I’m wondering if it’s worth trying to get it running first or just saying screw it and throwing all of the parts at it then figuring it out from there.

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

If you're having problems with a stock set up , they will be even worse the farther away from stock you get .

Learning how to walk before trying any back flips kind of thing . ;)

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

John Konstantine /

Two cycle engine that should idle & will not idle can have issue with air leak due to the crankcase seals or with cylinder base gasket.

I would replace the crank seal behind the stator plate (17mm x 30mm x 5mm) where any seal width between 5mm and 7mm can be used .

Make sure your points are not messed up. The points cam follower on my first NOI was all wallered out and it would only run WOT. They should not have any side to side play and only rotate around the pin.

Looksie here and see if it is similar https://mopedarmy.com/forums/read.php?6,4010133,page=1

Re: problems getting my garelli to start

Thanks for all the tips guys. Ended up getting it started yesterday, and was able to start it with 1 or 2 kicks every time i tried. So knock on wood, i think i got it sorted.

As for what was wrong - best way to describe it is that I’m a complete, and utter moron. Turns out, just because you can hear some gas sloshing around in the tank, it doesnt mean its actually flowing as well as it should. I didnt have a whole lot in there, and after spilling less and less fuel every time I tried a different jet, I figured I’m either getting really good at taking a carb apart, or there isn’t as much fuel in the bowl.

I’m guessing the moving it around my house or outside to get it started was enough motion to fill the bowl, but that was it. Probably why i could get it to run for a little bit the first time i started it, and then nothing. I filled the tank up (something i avoided because i wasted an entire tank when i found out my petcock was shot) and it fired right up. I will say, aside from my wobbly front wheel and brakes that need replaced it ran pretty damn good. Right up until the slide on my throttle seemed to stick and i cant really open her up.

So nothing wrong with the ped, just me.
