Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

Hey Guys --

I got into a crash the other day. Someone turned left in front of me to turn onto a cross street and didn't see me. Anyway, we made contact at about 30 MPH for me and about 15-20 MPH for them.

To me it looks like the bike is salvageable, but either way the Insurance claim on it right now values it at '$0' which to me is unacceptable. It's a 1977/1978 Motobecane 50v that I've had for almost 7 years and have grown very fond of.

Anybody know any good resources or ways to value these beauties so I can fight with the Adjuster/get it in my claim with the lawyer?

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

do you have insurance on the bike? if so, you might want to call them and tell them what happened. if it was the other driver's fault, they might go after them for you and get their insurance to pay.

other than that, i think you would need a lot of pictures of the bike to show what it is and it's condition. next you would need proof that people are buying/selling these and the prices they sell for. that would be your value. check nada and see if they have valuations for your bike. any completed ebay auctions for a similar bike or local ads selling a similar bike might be helpful too.

A car that old would be totaled out too.

You do not have collector insurance on the bike, don't even know if you could have gotten that for it anyway.

Possibly you should have had it appraised and then set the insurance as that for replacement value if you could have even done that?

For classic cars you can do that.

If it's a zero dollar claim, then just tell the insurance you want to keep it as is and be done with it. Fix it yourself.

Sounds like you insurance was only really good for if you hit someone.

no insurance required in my state for under 50CC. It's under bicycle law.

You need to find a moped shop that has a real business that can do an appraised value of the bike.

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

What do they say to the fact that you may be in a wheel chair for the rest of your life?

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

hope u alright, just get printouts of the most expensive moped retailers, and tell them u want a loaner ped in the meantime too.

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

Thanks Guys - good idea to check a few different places and some retailers.

I'm doing okay @cheetahchrome -- just a few broken bones, should make a full recovery. The bike too most of the damage and luckily I'm bigger than the car that pulled in front. Small mazda.. ha

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

I think it's funny when people cry that insurance won't pay out when you don't have insurance yourself.

The point of insurance is not to check a legal box with your state laws. Insurance is to protect your ass in situations like this. If you are on the road you should get insurance whether or not the law requires it. It's cheap. There's no real excuse not to. Progressive will insure you for declared value. I have my bikes covered at between 2k and 4k each. No appraisal needed if the number is reasonable.

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

Just a few broken bones?! Naw man, you need to get a lawyer to go after their insurance company for "pain and suffering". I'm sure there's free resources on some Reddit subreddit.

EDIT:

Do you have health insurance that's gonna cover everything? I had some of the best available, and I was still like $10k out-of-pocket after everything.

The cost of fixing your moped is nothin compared to all the medial bills you're going to receive. (edited)

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

I've lawyered up. Yes, I do have health insurance. No, I am not at fault, so @ trick METRIC your point on whether or not I should have insurance on my property (assumed collision insurance in this case) wouldn't matter. My insurance would not cover it so I'm not sure how your point comes into play. Also I'm not crying about anything, I'm just wondering about resources to value something that should carry some value even if it's only 20 bucks for scrap metal.

Either I have a tendency to down play things. My chin was in 5 pieces and both my knees are broken hence a 'few' not a couple broken bones, but I'm doing okay

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

I second the lawyer up, when my at the time GF got hit, in a very similar manner, she got one and it was for the best.

Im glad you ok, but some of those injuries could come back as issues later, and you should not have to foot the bill for them. Or the time you may miss at work.

All that said, all I did was show the adjuster adds selling similar bikes to mine, a Targa, and I was written a check for its market value in my area

Good luck dude, Im glad your still on your feet!

Thanks man! I'll give it a go. All I know in this situation is that life goes on, thankfully and legitimately.

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

Moped value is likely not worth the effort. If the frame isn't bent, then all ya need is the fork assembly n such.

"My chin was in 5 pieces and both my knees are broken." yeah you down-played a lot.

Were you wearing a full face helmet? My intuition says no...

> Were you wearing a full face helmet? My intuition says no...

That's kind of what I was thinking, is that it's probably not worth it, but that didn't stop me from wondering.

Your intuition is sharp and correct. No helmet and flippity flops. My injuries given the scenario and lack of gear are not bad all things considered..

and I have a new appreciation for the saying 'take it on the chin'

Ask the nurse for a referral to a good ambulance chaser.

I'm betting if you had proper gear on you probably would have walked away bruised.

Get a lawyer.

You mean my knees would be unaffected? What do you wear when you ride for pants?

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

I always wear pants (never shorts), I never wear anything less than sneakers (flip flops or sandals are a big no no), and I always wear at least a 3/4 helmet. I wouldn't be surprised if the lawyer with the other person's auto insurance asserts comparative negligence on your part because of your lack of protective gear. (edited)

I could just imagine some of the courtroom examples like Peewee with his high tops on the handlebars being safer.

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

I'm thinking you might have a hard time getting an appraisal on a crashed bike for insurance value after you've already talked to the insurance company.

I think insurance would have wanted the appraisal before the crash and finding comps of sold bikes will not work.

Your current coverage should list out how the bike would be fixed if and when there was a crash but since the insurance adjust did not want to even see the bike because it has no value to it, that too might be an issue for you.

I think the best option besides a lawyer for damages to yourself, is to talk to your insurance agent and go from there about the bike.

If that fails for fixing the bike, then when you lawyer up, you would ask for money for the replacement of the bike.

Them turning you down on the bike coverage might just be a Rouge to prevent you from getting proper legal assistance with the real issue which is your medical.

Chances are your insurance company will want to throw you under the bus to you might have to go to the state insurance commissioner's or whatever system your state has chances are you might just get swept under the rug like a bug squish nobody sees anything.

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

If you want to fix that moby, I have several used and NOS front fork assemblies as well as just about any part you may need for it.

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

Captain Janeway /

I had a similar accident on the same bike. Luckily I just flew over the hood and didn't break anything. I went after the guy who hit me and even 25-30 years ago, he had to shell out $800 to fix the forks. Collision insurance pays nada. They'll just total it. Today to them it might be worth $200.

Feel better. Please go get a full face helmet. People drive like such morons that I won't drive without one anymore.

$2000 replacement value.

i usually have my daily runner insured for that.

Re: Totaled Moped - Insurance Value?

After I fell on the lansquid ride last summer I realized that my usual mountain biking knee, elbows and padded shorts, and at least leather walking shoes are reasonable moped items for a ride on asphalt. Anything less is simply rolling the dice. Will it prevent a femur or tibia fracture ..probably not but road rash etc yes.
