Before and after of my Batavus Starflite

Replaced the top end and clutch and exhaust and carb off a parts bike I scored for super cheap. Lots of other little replacement parts. Painted with duplicolor engine enamel.

It runs pretty well. 30mph version that probably maxes out around there on flat ground and is a bit slow in the low end. Idles perfectly.

To give an idea of cost to hopefully motivate others in their restoration efforts.... bought the bike for 360. Parts bike was 80. Between the cost of the bikes and paint and all of the other little parts probably $600-650 total. And a lot of time. I started out as a total total novices and still consider myself to be.

Thanks for everyone that responded to my questions along the way!

Very nice

Re: Before and after of my Batavus Starflite

Awesome! How did you clean up the fenders?

The front fender came off of the parts bike and was in really good shape. Used the aluminum foil trick and waxed it. The back fender confused me a bit. It seemed like bare aluminum but every thing I saw on these bikes suggested it was chromed. So maybe it was chromed aluminum that was completely flaked off. Anyway I used 1000 grit sandpaper and then buffing compound to get it close to looking like chrome.

Thanks, I was thinking the exact same thing. Self diagnosed OCD over here.

When I cleaned up mine, I found out the fenders were stainless steel. Made for easy weld repair and polishing.

Re: Before and after of my Batavus Starflite

Yeah the fenders seem to be either stainless or aluminum coated steel. Aluminum foil works great on the chrome everywhere else but I'm afraid it will scratch the fenders. I may try the 1000 grit.

Good job! Great bike!

Wow!!! Congrats, IMHO you are not a novice anymore:)

Re: Before and after of my Batavus Starflite

Looks great! now that you've learned a lot, add a carb and weld on a chamber, that will help your all around performance with out much cash, or drastically altering the bike, if you wanna get nutz CrazyWayne has some insane porting for these things

Re: Before and after of my Batavus Starflite

Where’s the Hobbit motor?

I kid, nice bike. Glad you kept it original looking.

Re: Before and after of my Batavus Starflite

Just use a little degreaser on a rag, then a green scotch brite pad and some chrome polish to clean the fenders. (edited)

Thanks yeah I've found I'm not a huge fan of changing much. I thought I was going to get decals made but I like it as is.

I bought cheap polishing heads on Amazon for my drill and they worked pretty well.

Thanks. The more you learn the less you know and all that.

What carb would you recommend?

One issue I'm having is that the exhaust keeps melting my shoe....
