Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

Bringback2Ts Plz /

Tonight I tried the Wizard brand aluminum cleaner/polish, Arm & Hammer Extreme Whitening tooth paste and came nowhere close to bare aluminum. I also tried a kitchen cleaner for stainless steel etc. Hub is still stained and oxidized. I used a couple of different Dremel bits: nylon brush and a 1/2" super compacted felt bit. Nylon brush held up awesome and produced better results. The latter whittled next to nothing eventually. I need some stronger chemical to cut through the crud and I'm not spending more than the hub is worth on marine aluminum restorers.

Here's the bits I used:

Mother's Mag Polish.

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

no groms no blasters /

none of that

wire wheel on a bench grinder to get the gunk off

then sandpaper starting at like 40 and going up to maybe 1000

(start at 40 so you can flatten all those casting/parting lines)

then buffer wheels on the bench grinder with whatever polish or jewelers' rouge or whatever is appropriate for aluminum

just sit and listen to the radio or watch tv and spend some time with your hubs. it'll take a while.

they were never shiny. you have to make them shiny!

I've had good results using this stuff. They also have a polish specifically for aluminum.

blast em!

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

We need pics. If it's just oxidation you want Mother's or Autosol. If it's clear coat you'll need an abrasive.

This is what it looks like after a night of scrubbing. It still pretty stained.

I can think of many ways to polish metal and over the years have suggested some of them, with pics of many parts. All I got was shit from peeps who think polishing is a waste of time.

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

I'd suggest mounting the hub to a drill by the axle and using 150 wet sandpaper and moving up through to 1500 for that. Then hit it with a polish. It's not expensive but it takes time. Get 150, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 from a body shop and go to town.

That shiny stuff sure looks nice when you're done .

Problem is : you're never done keeping it shiny .

Personally , I prefer clean patina .

It gives me a lot more time to ride . ;)

That St. Cloud add is super sketchy and the guy doesn't pick up the phone.

@ Charles Cole: what are your polishing methods, sir? I'd like to get my hub as shiny as yours.

Sand the chrome off and rattle can. Black spokes ftw

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

after sodablasting or glassbead i dont go higher than 600 grit before hitting it with black brown and white.

i did up to 2000 once and it was a waste of time. aluminum is soft.

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

Disassemble everything, degrease, 0000 steel wool with chrome polish, Spin Tech polish to seal the finish and resist oxidization, then reassemble. Yeah, it takes a ton of time and is a real PITA but the results are great and last a good long time.

Started polishing MC hubs n parts back in the 60s. Lotsa ways to do it. I try to do it as time effective as possible and found it's much easier to keep a nicely polished surface brite with a minimal amount of work, however if you let it go, yes it will degrade. For round items use anything that will spin it. Mandrel from a proper fitting shaft, IE: axle, or in the case of a Hobbit, for instance, a tranny shaft mounted in a drill press or lathe. I don't throw away broken cranks cause they provide a mounting for parts that fit. I have a collection of shafts that can be used for mandrels. And for other parts lots of sanding after dremeling away casting imperfections, etc. Then my Baldor buffing motors, with plenty of different wheels and compounds. One compound to one wheel so there's no cross contamination. It just depends on how nice you want the final outcome to be. For nooks n crannies, easily made custom mandrels for the dremel is mandatory. About 80 hrs to mirror polish an entire Hobbit motor. Picture doesn't do it justice!

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

Man I thought I was obsessive. I've done forks and side covers, a couple trees but never a whole motor. Now if it isn't round and easily turned I don't have the patience. Maybe if I got a vapor blaster...

They start at about 15 grand!

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

Yah, seems like everything I need is 15 grand.

Wow!!! Charles that is some awesome work.

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

Thanks, Paul. One of these days I will complete the project and have a rider 'looker' bike that will hit around 50. I'm currently in a auto painting class, at the nearby community college, and have a whole bunch of Moped parts to do. The techniques of painting are pretty straight forward, but it's really 95% prep to get an outstanding job. By the way, your Puch looks great! (edited)

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

I cleaned a nasty set of hubs with just zep brand degreaser from Menards and a green scotch-brite pad. They came out really nice.

Did you re-spoke with stainless spokes?

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

Yeah I did.

A brand new hub with sealed bearings already pressed in costs $30 or so. I will have spent just as much on chemicals and polishing gadgets if I stop right now. Vapor blasting shops charge $50/hr. It's a no brainer: buy a new hub. I'd rather spend 80 hours playing with my daughters at the swings than polishing shit.

Re: Clean & polish aluminum Leleu hubs?

Just curious, does anybody here use a vibratory tumbler to clean parts? They’re pretty simple and cheep to build and tumbling media such as walnut shell isn’t that expensive either. I’m doing to be doing some experiments with a tumbler I recently built. Might make a thread on it if all goes well. They’re common for people who reload their own ammunition and need to clean the brass shells. Could work out well for smaller moped and motorcycle parts too

Make a thread on it on matter how it works out .

Knowledge requires both sides of the story .
