ONYX MOTORBIKES - electric moped content (looks like freespirit/pinto)

This came up in my feed. Looks like a Monday Motorbikes knockoff:

knock-off? not really. The number of electric moped brands is teeny tiny compared to all the bicycle brands. From what I've read, hub motors are best for flat land (onyx) while chain driven are best for hills (Monday motorbikes) . (edited)

yeah i just meant since they both look like puchs.

Electric scooters are everywhere these days, but an electric moped just seems kinda pointless.

Electric scooters are still toilets. At least the Electric Mopeds keep the the character of the classic mopeds looks.

Built by moped guys in SF, similar to Monday Motorbikes. Def based on moped design, but these use an electric rear hub wheel instead of an electric engine and chain drive transmission.

Be interesting to see how they're priced compared to Monday, which I thought was sky high.

Re: ONYX MOTORBIKES - electric moped content (looks like freespirit/pinto)

I asked (on Instagram) if they need a test rider for the mean streets of Compton & they said they were going to be down in my area next month & said I could try it! The other model says top speed of 60mph @_@ Honest™

Re: ONYX MOTORBIKES - electric moped content (looks like freespirit/pinto)

I like em. I wasnt sure at first but I think it's a pretty elegant take on classic style and modern electric tech. I personally prefer the frame mounted motor but I think the rear hub works better with this aesthetically and probably generally easier. very clean and simple. pedals look great on there and work.

this is very much a simple clean electric moped.

I also agree electric scooters are more generally practical for storage etc, but same could be said about any scooter vs moped. this captures the moped style really pretty perfectly.

There were some shortcuts obvious in this too , but simple clean elegant electric moped.

Monday's kinda a small electric motorcycle. it fits the same niche but it's a different aesthetic, a different target. They both have their place, and both are too expensive for me (but anything new is)

Re: ONYX MOTORBIKES - electric moped content (looks like freespirit/pinto)

also if you think the prices are too high, try to spec out a build yourself. I agree theyre high, but theyre new and small production. Any decent capacity batteries and good motor aint cheap, and fabricating the entire frame and fitting it with new good components, you can't do it cheap.

Re: ONYX MOTORBIKES - electric moped content (looks like freespirit/pinto)

actually that's a fun question. if you could build one how would you do it, which parts battery etc?

I'd probably tryn go 48V frame mount LiPo battery set somewhere upwards of at least 20ah, but LFP ones are easier to find ready made and might be easier to swap out one on a charger. that'd probably be cheaper

Although i agree scooters look like toilets, i like mopeds because they are fun outdated machines.

If i want to travel on an electric device i'd buy an electric bicycle.

I’ve been doing just that and it’s all cheep until you get to the power supply.

But you can always diy that too.

hub motors have more torque but are better at lower RPMs

theres two kinds of shaft driven motors, basically squirrel cage and BLDC

BLDC is basically a hub motor that you can change the gear ratio on

squirrel cage is a BLAC motor and the magnetic fields are caused by inducing current across steel plates instead of fixed magnets. These like to operate at high RPM and are most efficient up there.

technically you guys should refer to battery capacity in watt-hours, its technically more accurate than Ah, because with a motor controller the load is never even, it spikes up and down so much as you start and stop. Ah is only useful if your draw is constant. Wh is the better measurement.
