3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

Adam Kollipara /

Hey everyone,

With the investment of a 3D printer, my brother and I have printed original sized battery box tops for the Urban Express Deluxe model! Take a look at the attached photo! With this top we've made, I have dremelled the sharp support edges down and will sand them with fine grit sandpaper for an original look (not sanded yet in photo). This design is an original design from scratch created using the height measurements of a standard NU50 battery box top and the measurements of the bottom tray of a Deluxe NU50M battery box so that it fits right on the original Deluxe battery tray. Keep an eye out for an eBay listing within the next few weeks.

Thanks!

~Adam

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

ebay? why not sell them to the community here? no fees, and people aren't dicked around. you should make standard Nu50 ones too. not just the deluxe.

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

Sounds like a good idea to me, I'll make a post in the buy & sell page when we make some more tops. Since the Deluxe size is harder to find (and I wanted to make one for my bike), we started with that, but soon we'll make the standard NU50 too. I'll give a heads up when that happens. For those who are interested in the Deluxe top, send me a PM for pricing and such. Thanks!

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

you are going at this wrong. When people want to buy something, they want to know the price upfront. Tell the masses the price. not PM for pricing. I think all NU tops are equally unicorn in scarcity though.

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

Not bad, hell I'd use it.

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

$50 + free shipping (US only). In that price I remove all the supports (Dremel and sand) and ensure proper fitment on the battery tray. When these are made, they take 9 hours total on the 3D printer. Let me know if you want any more info. I guess what I should say is PM me if you are interested so I can keep inquiries organized in my inbox. Thanks!

Nice, make Hobbit/Express headlight rings next...

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

Cool. I know zip about 3D printers. Thought they'd be insanely expensive. Saw some guy made a mold for a wheel hub on one too. Great use since that is a stupidly hard part to find. Never did figure how people managed to just lose the tops. Oh well...

Good luck.

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

thats probably a sustainable price!

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

Make the qt50 battery box next please.

Hell qt50 side covers and you'd really clean up

This might be a good candidate for vacuum forming, 3D print a plug instead of the final product?

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

cool! always great to see new parts available to the public.

one thing i'd suggest, get a couple weeks of riding on it before you sell them, there have been a few 3d printed parts sold on here than ended up having to get recalled and bought back because they weren't durable enough for the job.

if you're gonna sell them, bondo and finish one so they can get a idea of what it could look like, people have a hard time visualising stuff like that but if you give them a suggestion it helps.

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

Adam Kollipara /

Yes, once the temperature and weather permit, I'll ride it around a bit to check it's durability. I put it on my moped yesterday and I've attached pics for all your viewing. Bondo and painting are to come when it gets a little warmer and less wet/humid here in Michigan, as well as chemical testing (gas, oil, battery acid). If any of you have more suggestions, please let me know. I appreciate all the helpful feedback so far!

Looks pretty good to me , even with the furrowed / grooved finish .

The groves hide most imperfections and smears .

Maybe offer both a smooth and a grooved finish .

Ditto. That's a nice looking little stocker! Nice and clean. You must have picked it up with low miles or a great PO

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

dang that turned out great. I've been short on ideas for 3d printing. I always see stuff like this an think rad! and then it's like a grand for a printer and I've got maybe 30 bucks worth of projects in my head.

still that turned out great.

whatta ya design in?

It has about 3700 miles, so it's very nice for the amount of use it's had. I really like the blue 83's and decal design. In May 2017 I originally bought an 82 NU50 off ebay that was in a storage locker for years, got it running, then added electric start. A few months later I found the blue 83 NU50M on craigslist coming with "extra parts." Turned out the extra parts were a complete but dismantled 82 NU50M with a paint-stripped frame, and I got it all for $300. I had already fixed up my 82 NU50 engine, so I swapped that as well as the best of the parts I had onto the 83. Painted the hubs, stator cover, muffler and shield, trans cover, and put on new tires. I cleaned all the dirt off of the engine, polished the chrome, and waxed the paint. I'm really happy how it turned out. And yeah, I like my mopeds nice 'n stock 'n clean :) The moped pic in my profile has that one plus the 81 NC50 I've had for the past 11 years.

The 3D printer was just under $400 and my brother used FreeCAD to design the cover.

You were lucky to land all that extra electrical since the NU50 and NU50M are wired so differently. I'm going to do it too. I bought what I thought was a NU50 wiring harness from a guy, but it turned out to be a NU50M. He also threw in the starter, levers, CDI, alternator, etc all for $20. He said he figured someone who had them breeding in her garage would appreciate them. These are the best bikes! I have the black with blue decal as well. My everyday rider. Kitted, lightly ported, performance pipe, GY6 clutch but still uses stock carb. Will hit over 40 and climbs hills insanely well.

Re: 3D-Printed Battery Box Tops for Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50M

Pro-tip from someone with a qualified opinion - polyurethane cast those - don't print them. I make the switch bases and the 108 minarelli fans rated for high RPM. I've also made some other shit and print on a regular basis. Also, your layers are perpendicular to the direction that force is going to be applied to that part, lending it to delaminate.

My fans are NOT 3D printed!!! The originals were, and couldn't be consistently produced. Made overcoming that initial bad rep VERY hard - and tons of people think they're still 3D printed even though they're not. They've been design reviewed through FEA analysis for the last revision, and the analysis showed were previous revision and originals were failing on the mark. The switch bases are printed and I have no issues with them, but do have issues with raw materials.

Do you still make the battery box tops for the larger battery on the NU50?

Thanks...Gary
