New guy from the PNW

Hi guys my name is Drew, I'm 22 years old and I live near Seattle, WA. I became interested in mopeds very recently after watching a youtuber named Austin Augie, who rides a Puch Cobra. I had to have one. I'd been searching for quite a while with almost no luck until finally I came across a 1987 Tomos TTLX. Runs ok, the head was JB welded by the previous owner... it needs some TLC.

Starting ripping it up almost immediately. I cut the frame before I even got it registered. Stripped all the turn signals and old lights off and ordered some replacement parts.

Chipped off all the JB weld and took the motor apart today. Ordering a full A35 70cc kit in the near future!

Re: New guy from the PNW

Nice find! Plenty of Tomos gurus here when you get down to the nitty gritty...

Read the wiki for porting (head prep) and tuning.

Check if there are needle bearings on your crank vs bushings.

Replace all crank and case seals.

Good luck!

Thanks Steve! Is there a certain thread l should look into about possible motor swaps? Debating on just doing a larger motor swap because not only is the head bad, but the transmission seems to be crapping out too!

Re: New guy from the PNW

Very clean man i dig that, theres a guy named Will Childs in the puddlecutters from Portland, OR with a bike with a similar look, I rode it once when all my bikes were down and it was so fun.

You are better off just keeping the bike original especially if you have no access to welding equipment and tools needed to modify a frame. Do some research on you motor take it all the way apart because a bike that is close to 30 years old will need what was stated above. New seals and if you want to kit it new bearings. And since the original owner used jb weld on the head is a good idicator it will need a tear down. Even if you find the internals destroyed you at least gain knowledge of the engine internals and how it works. Then you can worry about getting the parts to make the motor you have work or finding a used motor to get back running. The nice thing about tomos is they are still being made so new parts either stock or performance are abundant. Maybe start with making the stock bike perform better for your style of riding and as you gain knowledge upgrade and kit it. This will save you time and money and gain you experince.

Thanks Peter! I’ve done a fair amount of research so far, the more l tear it apart the more I’ll learn!

Re: New guy from the PNW

what is going on with those handlebars?

Haha there’s the comment l was looking for! l just pushed the bars down for now to kind of get an idea of how some lower bars will look. I’ve got new bars in the mail :~)

Re: New guy from the PNW

Thats one of my old bikes! Its already kitted. If its just the head that is JB welded, just get a new head, no need for a whole new kit.

Order some actual low-rise handlebars while you are at it, those look whack the way you have them.

...was that tupperware for a headlight lens?

Re: New guy from the PNW

I feel like almost everyone slammed their stock handlebars on their first moped. Folks'll give ya a hard time for lotsa that kinda stuff, but only cuz we're mostly all guilty. #1) don't take any of it to heart. its hard to read inflection in text on a forum, but most of the time you get a few jabs, especially when yer new, but it's almost always intended in fun

#2) Lenny is a new troll, and a pretty good one, laugh with him, rather than be laughed at by him

#3) cool bike, it'll be a lot of fun. You'll quickly learn that these require way too much maintenance, but eventually you'll figure it all out and it'll be great. Tomos are awesome for reliability, performance and aftermarket support, but they've got transmission trouble you'll need to take care of eventually. it's all been done and documented and the details and all are readily available here. learn to search first before asking though - most every Q has an A, and if you just toss the same old question out, some sour old bums'll rip you apart for it.

Nice job mr. Wild You should post that on all the newbies first post.

Except I'm kind of wondering why you picked on me but whatever.

Have a nice day

Austin's Cobra is wonky donky.

Wait really? This already has a 70cc kit? l thought it felt a little too zippy to be 50ccs...

Thanks man! I’m not taking anything on here too seriously, just having fun!

Re: New guy from the PNW

Scored some good insider knowledge there Drew!

Another PNW moped newbie, with a vintage MA bike, but now real inside knowledge gleaned. Yet.

It’s been a while! I ditched the old rusted tank and instead went with a Yamaha rd50 tank. Made a little seat out of an old snowboard and added a few other things. Got the 45mm 70cc alukit in the mail a while ago. Trying my hand at jetting. Went with a 160 & 170 jet after looking through the jetting chart. Really no idea what I’m doing haha. Anyone with a moped in the Bellingham, WA area??
