Magnum exhaust gasket

Got a major exhaust lead where the pipe clamps onto the header. Tried tightening the bolt but it didn't help. Looks like there is supposed to be a gasket there (#25 in the pic). I couldn't find it anywhere online, or much info on it. Anybody have an alternative?

Aww sheeaattt meant to post to repair

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

Cut a piece of aluminum soda can and wrap it around the header a few times.

Dude, I have the same issue on my XK I just picked up a few months ago!

I too wonder and was going to cut a thin piece of aluminum roof flashing and slide it in there and around the header pipe. Then tighten the clamp.

However if there is the proper gasket out there, I'd get it instead.

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

I think that was an asbestos gasket. I have some new old stock ones but they crack if you try to bend them. You're gonna have to jury rig something up to seal that leak.

Heavy gage aluminum foil has worked for me plenty of times.

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

I've just cut one out of regular gasket sheet stock (Treats or automotive store).

Works great, zero leakage.

Ok cool. So just whatever exhaust gasket material I can find, cut a rectangle out and then wrap it around where it clamps to the header? Seems easy enough.

And it goes in between the header and the chamber and not between the chamber and the clamp correct? (edited)

Just sealed mine up using aluminum roof flashing like I mentioned above. It was a tight fit so whatever you use you might want to use something made of metal because paper will just get shredded trying to put it back together.

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

Thats funny my Pinto I just picked up is also missing the gasket.

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

It's nice having an unmolested original for a perfect pattern.

You didn't try very hard.

When looking for antique parts you have to think outside the box.

Thanks Larry for the warning as this one will never be used for anything other than a template.

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

might try the aluminum gasket as described above and some copper exhaust seal paste if it's that bad

Actually I'm thinking copper or aluminum sheet or some rolled gasket material will work just fine. Just trace it off and cut it out. Pretty simple.

The tab is to prevent a leak at the seam and yes there was some thought given to it.

If you prefer beer cans or duct tape, then by all means don't let me stop ya. (edited)

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

Excellent thanks dude, you are the man!

A cut up beer can just wouldn't do my stocker MKII justice.

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

I forgot the thickness.

Sorry was running errands before work.

Will get it tonight.

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

1mm thick

Re: Magnum exhaust gasket

1 MM was way too thick for my pipe. Unless I wanted to expand the pipe end to accommodate something thicker but I did not want to go the route and possibly cause another isdue or the clamp then not seal it again.

Just my two cents on my pipe.
