Electric Moped Conversion

Hey all!

I decided I want to embark upon an electric moped conversion, and am just starting to dive into it.

Has anyone here done this? I'd love to just get some basic pointers and advice from anyone who's gone through it before.

Right now, the idea is to just get an old vintage frame that has a chain drive, and replace the engine with an electric motor and keep it as a chain drive setup. Haven't picked out a frame yet but the awesome guys and gals at Moto Ocho in Denver have a pretty good selection for me to choose from!

Re: Electric Moped Conversion

It has been done, there was a few yrs ago someone who made a Moby electric, did a really nice job of it too, there were pics of the build....I suck at the search thing, but maybe you can find it? Definitely worth looking at.

Re: Electric Moped Conversion

Sometimes the best way to search the wiki is to just google what you want and moped army stuff comes up

Re: Electric Moped Conversion

Marc Also built this 70mph electric Moped / motorcycle thing -

But sadly, Marc just wrecked his 750 last week, so he's temporally out of commission. He hit a truck that ran a red and broke his Jaw & Both Wrists. Otherwise he is OKish, but no mor e-bikes for a minute. Keep him in your thoughts and such.

Re: Electric Moped Conversion

I looked into converting a 80 Toyota truck about six years ago to drive five miles to work in cold or bad weather. I got laid off and stopped but still have the adapters left for the motor, any way here is a link somewhere back then I saw a motorcycle throttle style controller The say they are closing on the 17th next week.:http://www.kta-ev.com/Magura_Twistgrip_Throttle_p/magura.htm

Looking at that old thread, gosh, interesting thoughts people have. Guy building it says 6.5kW, will go stock moped speeds, 6.5kW = 7hp... yeesh (it's 8.7hp btw).

6.5kW with an electric motor with proper gearing would make for a very quick moped! 45-50mph no problem with really good acceleration! You only need ~2hp to go 30mph.

Re: Electric Moped Conversion

Very cool Tony, just read your whole thread, have no fear about it "dragging on" it happens to everyone and just means itt'll be that much more polished when it's complete, and of course all that more rewarding.

Send me a PM any time on shock help.

And to the OP, electronics/batteries are expensive. The rest isn't bad if you have access to some machining equipment. If not, you've got your work cut out for you. Definitely check out the endless sphere forums.

I couldn't care less about the Trees. I rode with 3 other gas mopeds on friday, my ebike (slow, underpowered) accelerated faster than all 3 peds. A couple of them were built too. My top speed isn't as high as that one right now, but it's not designed for it.

It will never have to be rebuilt, and it has way more range than the built peds.

You can play the gutter punk card, but the fact is that electric mopeds make a lot more sense and are way more fun to ride because of the acceleration.
