I'm quite impressed by everyones help on me starting my own division.
I was curious though, if a member of the moped army, are we restricted to older classic style mopeds, or can a member ride on their late 80s early 90s sprees, razzes & elites?

The Moped Army doesn't recognize sprees, razzes and elites as mopeds. The year of the bike isn't the issue so much as the fact they have a much more "scooter" styling - no pedals, small wheels, etc. They are under 50cc, but that's not enough to warrent them being called mopeds in my mind. I know that they are registered that way in some states, but that's beside the point.
New mopeds are just fine though.
We are the moped army, not the small scooter army. We encourage the classic moped style.

Plus mopeds have a bit more "cool" factor. Scooters are very hard to fix up and work on. And they are mostly plastic (easy to break). It's always impressive to be able to fix your own machine. I'm learning how to fix my moped and I'm totally pround of myself. So tell that to your friends ... plus mopeds are cheaper.
I'm not anti-scooter ... they are legitimate forms of transportaton and even have some advantages over mopeds and motorcycles. But the Moped Army is organized around mopeds. Of course, no one says you can't ride w/ scooterists. But a scooter is not a moped.
Think of it this way ... imagine this was a muscle car club. Now, someone tried to join w/ a pickup truck. Yes, they both have big engines and tough football jocks tend to drive them (no offence to anyone who drives a truck!) ... but you wouldn't call an S-100 a muscle car, would you? It's the same basic principle w/ the Moped Army.
As a man of failing lifestyle of "fix your ow @!#$" I've come to be quite mechanically inclined. So as you can guess, cars are a big thing for me. I not once paid someone else to fix my own cars, mopeds, motorcycles etc.
As for the muscle car metaphor you gave, thats another conversation all together.
Muscle cars were fast from the factory, stock, original.
Hotrods were late 30s-late 50s cars built for speed by owner
Modern rods are early 60s-mid 80s cars built for speed by owner (not exlcuding trucks, so long as modifications were made to alter speed and performance)
So, if we adapt that to mopeds, if allowed, i will require of my division, modifications. not nessicarily for speed and performance, but for style.
It has to stand out for it to be accepted. None of you basic yellow and black plastic pannels.
I'm talking off road kits, piston replacement for more performance, chop jobs, anything that makes it stand out. Persons in my dicision *WILL know how to fix their own mopeds, if they don't already
Usually anyone im associated with, are into cars or engines period. I'm sure you will be pleased by what this division will do.
So think about it, and reply with your opinions, if you think a total xnay on the newer scooter styles, i will comply.

In the 6th paragraph, thats supposed to be division :)
Moped: A two or three wheeled vehicle other than a tractor having an engine of no more than 2HP and an automatic transmission and maximum speed of 30MPH having pedals for propulsion.
That's the California definition and pretty much complies with the Federal (USA) description.
So in a nutshell: Pedals, 2HP max, 30MPH max, no gearshift.

Well if you design it, create it, chrome it, modify it, heads will turn. If its stock, original and rare leave it alone but if you should happen to be riding your moped and hear something that idles like a hog and accelerates like a rice-burner its just me and my plastic panel scooter style moped, but Don Yenko would love this toy... So how would a 50 cc moped with scooter propulsion and motorcycle features fit in? Sometimes the borders defining these things are well hidden.. OK, it doesn't have pedals, but that's also true for most of the newer mopeds.

i guess that would probably be treated as a moped, it has an auto clutch, and a 49cc engine. the only thing that really is going against it is the lack of pedal
s, and the top tank. There are many mopeds who are missing one or more of the key points needed to be a moped; pedals, step through frame, automatic shift, but what we do is just check it out on a moped by moped basis. You would not believe the @!#$ i got when i bought my bridgestone, it is a top tank, with a kickstart, no pedals, and a manual transmission.
Actually that's not a top tank, it's a helmet compartment. Go figure.
