Moped reputations

Ok someone tell me to shut the hell up if this topic has already been covered but I'd like to know more about what reputations/stereotypes are following the different moped manufacturers out there.

I know all to well from experience how unreliable my frenchies are (motobecanes) but when they work they blast pretty good.

All the cool kids ride Puchs I guess. I dunno any cool kids.

Anyone else?

Jawa mopeds have always had a bad rep due to electrical problems with their thyristors, as well as poor build quality. Hence the reason why they were the cheapest new mopeds you could buy back in the day. I've been told by former JAWA dealers that the name JAWA stood for "Junk a Week After".

AMF (rear mounted McCulogh engine)- junk even when they were new. (edited)

Re: Moped reputations

Sachs tend to get a bad rap due to the iffy clutch not holding up to any kits. If the clutch handled power the same as pretty much anything else they would actually be a force to be reckoned with. But regardless, a solid, well maintained 505/1D with some minor porting, 15mm Bing, and gutted and tuned stock pipe is the most reliable sleeper ripper you can get!

Jawas suck... they look super wierd and dorky and awesome but the electrics are funky.

French bikes are great once you replace most of the french parts!

Indians are pretty much hated. I had one a few years ago, it was probably the most reliable bike out of any of mine or my friends bikes tho. Only maintenance i really had to do was re weld the exhaust and replace the burned out exhaust valve (due to broken exhaust). Rode that thing over 3000 miles that summer.

My 2 strokes seem to have something stupid break the day after i fix whatever the last stupid thing was. Right now the petcock is leaking like crazy, before that the swingarm broke, before that it was the seat bracket, before that rear axle, pedal fell off before that and on and on. I probably spend more time working on them than riding them (especially if you count working on friends bikes) and sometimes find myself wondering whats going to break on the next long ride.

Re: Moped reputations

Garelli, in my opinion, has an undeserved bad rep for the rubber clutch system. personally, I find them easy to work on and easy to maintain, much more than the shoe clutches. my beef with Garelli is limited rpm, restricting the ability to generate top end.

I agree with trashtruck about Garellis.

As far as reps go I think Gayrellies are macho and frenchies are pretty slutty but that might just be rumors rumors rumors

Well, Jawas were the cheapest mopeds on western markets due not bad quality, but dollar/marks/franks..hungry communist government- whatever of their products had a slight chance to be bought by westerners was immediately exported, totally dumped-

socialist workers made peanuts compared to free world people so even the smallest profit was good for government-

anyway, any hard currency obtained was obligatory shipped to USSR from every Iron Curtain countries.

Average worker in Czechoslovakia had to be on waiting list for any motorized vehicle and some years Jawa Babetta moped was not available at all- the whole production exported to "spoiled" capitalists.

Young people like me at that time could not afford new Jawa- it cost about three months of salary of your parents, go figure...

The myth about Jawa bad quality is due of lack of parts and low knowledge how to fix it.

Re: Moped reputations

stock tomos FTW

if you're broke get a puch maxi

spiderman rides one

Re: Moped reputations

anyone who thinks Garellis can't be fast is dumb and/or lazy. I've have/have had a shit load- they're sick and the rubber clutch isn't that bad.

Re: Moped reputations

♣Slew Foot♣ /

batavus is either the slowest or the fastest, depends on how much money you drop.

tomos is the most reliable ped i have owned, i had alot.

mcollough amf is the jankiest, amf with a v1 is like an amc gremlin with a 500s block in it.

v1's and honda's are the blastiest.

sachs are for people who like to tinker with stuff, alot.

Re: Moped reputations

puch- too easy man, get a motorcycle already

tomos- new jersey, biturbo, how do I go 70mph, my clutch exploded

minarelli- pizza, polini

garelli- my clutch exploded

sachs- how do I get the head off, my clutch exploded (edited)

^ha i think i've seen this posted every other year

Re: Moped reputations

All this is kinda making me want a Jawa

Re: Moped reputations

I remember when 2012 was the year of the Jawa.

I personally always want a Jawa in my garage. Mainly as something to work on when all my bikes are running well. Jawa love.

Re: Moped reputations

Pinball Jawa is happening. Already got a bike donated to the cause.

Jawa technology is far more advanced then most people can comprehend.

My FA50 (suzuki) is a beast among all!!

Just saying. 3400 miles. Trumpin along every day. I put brakes on. That's it.

Re: Moped reputations

Columbia Solo Commuter , no kits what so ever , near impossible to find parts for , am told that they will do about 32 mph on a good day ,but ya got to love the water jacket and air cooled setup they have...

Re: Moped reputations

FA50's are rock solid and dependable. The secret is simple, leave it the hell alone and just accept it for what it is.

Sachs is a source of daily heartbreak. It's a love/hate relationship.

So much truth in this

Re: Moped reputations

Brent Bublitz /

I have had minarelli, tomos, puch, batavus, pugs, moby, honda, even a AMF in there somewhere...

The Sachs is my favorite at the moment. The 505 is seriously under rated. The new Airsal kit is great, parts and really solid frames available everywhere dirt cheap. When/if Walt ever makes a hammer clutch for the 505 it will be game on.
