Double Trouble Dan /

For small parts I use this mix . scrub with a toothbrush. Not Mine!

phosphoric acid 35%

sulfuric acid 7%

Glycol ether 7%

monopropoline 7%

oxalic acid 2%

water 42%

In case you are wondering , its this.

For larger parts its good old "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner.

9.5% hydrochloric acid

Re: best rust removers for chrome?

I'd skip most of that and just go with the oxalic acid. It works great for cleaning up rusty chrome.

I have lab grade oxalic acid that i use as a brightener on decks . I'll try it.

where do you get oxalic acid? I have some light rust spots popping up on my SI chrome and I am currently disassembling it to media blast and repaint it.

We have a huge tub of this at the bike shop I work at... It really only gets used on my moped parts and it works wonders, smells edible too

Aluminum foil and a little water or vinegar works great.

I tried oaxalic acid(Savogran brand 'wood bleach' in crystal form)on some rusty spokes and in an Express tank;I mixed it 8-1 in water and heated it up before pouring it into the container but it left a white powder/crystal sediment coating like stuff all over my spokes which took hours to clean off and it took off some metal too,I think the stuff coated my tank too...

I'm thinking of using straight(5%)white vinegar from Walmart next and hopefully it won't give me a problem w/ my original plating(or chrome) that's still left on most of my parts...

Toothpaste

Can you soak it in toothpaste? for me I'd rather not have to scrape at it

Re: best rust removers for chrome?

Toothpaste is mildly abrasive so it can be used as a polish. Soaking parts in toothpaste will do nothing except add a minty scent.

Re: best rust removers for chrome?

I use steel wool to polish off surface rust, if it's pitted I dip smaller stuff in evaporust, or muriatic/hydrochloric acid for big or heavily stuff. Electrolysis for bigger stuff if I con't care about the chrome.

Steel wool with Rem-Oil

SOS Pads. Evaporust.

Re: best rust removers for chrome?

coca cola works (supposedly)

Coke works really well, I derusted my rack with it. Take a little diet coke (its less sticky) and use an aluminum foil pad to scrub. It takes a little scrubbing not a lot, or if you soak it, you can then go over it with a toothbrush and it will work well too

You forgot paper towels, and JB Weld.

Re: best rust removers for chrome?

For light surface rust and minor chrome pitting I use #0000 steel wool with Blue Magic metal polish cream. It does wonders.
