The conical bearing off the kx 80?? Anyway ya can. U r not reusing it. Then you can probably use the Vespa Olympia headset which is on the treats website. I did this on a hobbit..may need to mess with the head tube of the moby to get the kx 80 triple tree to fit right. Post pics and peeps will help.
I used a sharp chisel to get between the bearing and the bottom triple, and worked my way around til or worked up and off. Wasn't hard. You can also cut a slot in the bearing carefully and split it apart with a chisel.
i mean how to get the inner race off of the moby tube.
Don't reuse that race. Buy a new one. And don't press it in until you are sure that the length of the kx 80 matches the head tube of the moby. A decent bike shop has the correct park tools to put on and off. It has to be an old school bike shop that has tools from the 1980 s. I had Steve Rex in sacramento mess with my hobbit head tube and I pressed in the race with an appropriately sized piece of metal tubing in my friends truck repair shop.
The Moby will have a head tube the same as the Hobbit.
I just dremeled to opposing slits on either side of the race and chiseled the fucker off
Oh you need a blind bearing puller to get the cup out of the head tube
Never strike a bearing race with any tool !
If you must split the race, use a oxyacetylene torch and rapidly heat the race to soften it. Striking the race can make it shatter and someone may get hurt.
I have bearing race inside me for about the last 25 years. It is 2mm from entering my abdominal cavity and intestines. I knew better but slipped and hit the race instead of the retaining collar.
Even using a thin chisel can chip the race and send you to the hospital. At the very least wrap a rag tightly around the race and tape it in place.
The safest way is with the proper puller or softening the race. If you soften and strike the race it will expand and fall off with just 1 or 2 hits with a dull chisel. You can easily heat the race without overheating any other parts if it is done very quickly with a hot flame. I ran an automotive machine shop for many years and have changed tens of thousands of bearings that are pressed on.
I got it. it was just pressed on. the view from the third pic had me confused . it looked to me that the metal in the two grooves was part of the race and not the tube. I guess looks can be deciving.
