Stop signs cannot always be placed exactly where the need to be. Thats why they paint the lines on the road - to give drivers an definitive, clear, absolute place to stop.
You are only required to stop at the LIMIT LINE, then you can proceed.
If there is no limit line, then you stop at the stop sign, and then pull forward if visibility is limited.
If you stopped at the line, then you're fine and should have done some research and fought the ticket. (edited)
