Free Pile finds while on a moped

Downhill Harvey (OFMC) /

I love a moped, cuz when you spot a free pile, you can stop on a dime. In Portland, people don't throw their crap away, they put it on the curb, so it can be re purposed, by someone. What freebee's have you scored? Here's my yesterdays finds, a working waffle maker, and two funky albums,

But do we care? I really don't need to see a waffle maker someone pulled out of the trash. Unless it a really freaky-deeky waffle maker.

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

Glad for you Harvey and there are all sorts of mechanical and metal bits that can be re-purposed for moped uses too

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

We were just talking the other day about how often you can find rad stuff on the side of the road. Not curb alerts, just like on the side of the street. Going slow and being exposed to your surroundings on a bicycle/moped lends to it, I think. I found a perfect ratcheting 8mm Gearwrench while riding my ciao one time, it was pretty cool. Will found a nice sodbuster jr Case knife a while ago, I was jealous. Useful stuff like metal, bungee cords, ratchet straps, etc all the time

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

I cruise my neighborhood at night quite often and not too long ago I came across a "free pile" from a house that was being foreclosed on. Mostly junk, but they had two nearly new metal workbenches with shelves. I hurried back with my truck and they made a nice addition in my garage.

When I was a teen/young adult in the 70s I found a tube guitar amp, gold ring and crosses that I scrapped for 100.00, 4 ten dollar bills in a box of junk, tools, flashlights, bicycles, lawnmowers, so much other stuff but then with family, work I didn't go junk collecting for years .

But several years ago out where I live now I found a pile of ten speed bikes more lawn mowers, a complete puch maxi in boxes and found the magnum XK in my profile picture in a construction dumpster that all it needed was a set of points and a rusted ring changed to run.

We got 4 or 5 people/trucks that drive around at garbage days that take all the stuff now. It's not legal to garbage pick where I live but I guess the cops look the other way.

ditto on the forclosure / eviction, but no sheriff orange warning stickers on anything.

junk furniture, crack pipe, syringes, court paperwork (drug charges, theft) from out of town,

most of the stuff went to donation or the dump after we failed to find the owners...

i was just looking for yard sales.

I found an electric hospital bed on the curb. And a electric wheelchair.. I tried to make a moped bench out of the bed. It didn't work so well but the steel it's made out of is nice. My dad found a decent green '78 express in a demolition pile. That was neat!

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

I know the dollar is pretty shitty lately but who throws away ten dollar bills?

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

The same people throw away jewelry and other stuff like that. Somebody passes away, nobody wants to sort through all the boxes of junk and it ends up on the curb.

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

Between pedding and walking my dog every morning I have found a bunch of stuff. Wrenches, $10 bill, $20 bill, flip movie camera, big Bud Lite patio umbrella, tons of pencils and pens, new putty knife. One of those old round 2 1/2 gal gas cans with the rubber spout. It was even full of 2 stroke. A Space Pen that I sent in and got repaired for free. 2 boxes with 76 brand new CD's.

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

I've found lots of stuff but my three favorite things are a nice working iPod shuffle, a dewalt cordless drill in the case with charger and extra battery, and a pabst blue ribbon sign from the 70s.

Where is Crazzy Wayne in this discussion? The subject of rooting through trash piles feels like his kind of bag.

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

Last week i found a bottle of itasca that i'm sure was dropped by one of us... lol

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

Here in Madison we have a holiday called, "Hippy Christmas".

Every year the second weekend in August is move out day for all of the students at the UW. Friday is Hippy Christmas eve and Saturday is Hippy Christmas morning.

There parents have bought them all this super nice stuff and they throw it all away because they are just going to buy nicer newer stuff on the other side of the country.

I have found multiple scooters, a Tomos, a Hobbit, a complete and unopened home beer making starter kit, and nice high end fishing rod and reel.

I got a super nintendo with hella cartridges (including Chrono Trigger), a laptop absolutely choked with some pretty extreme porn, and empty kegs that I got the returns on.

One of my buddies actually got the old arcade machine, "Luck and Wild". It was just sitting on the curb with the chord fucked up.

Plus like 4-5 lava lamps a year if you wanted them.

I always scout on a moped, horde my booty somewhere, then come pick it up with a car or van.

How much for the gas can?

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

Sorry I'm keeping it. I like the round ones they don't tip over when you are driving and it doesn't have that safety crap on it.

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

oh man i get so much shit when the schools let out.

also i seem to find gas can all the damn time. we actually collected so many we had to purge and threw away like 10 of em ourselves

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

i've been a dumpster diver for a long time. some of my best scores include over 3k in cash, my matching pioneer turn tables that i found like 18 and 15 years ago that still work, a military bomb detonator, an atlas accordion, and pretty much all my ratchets and sockets.

found a complete tgb 101s in the trash once.

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

What is it with the "new" gas cans that spill more on the ground that will pour into something.

I just scored a working Laptop. I found it while on my ped. Oh yeah, I was on my bike, and spot a dollar bill just floating down a busy street. Nailed it. (edited)

Totally forgot I found this on the curb a few weeks ago while riding .

I stood next to it claiming dibs waiting for my wife to come with her caravan while the scrapers came by wanting to throw it into the back of their pick up truck with the scrap washers and dryers.

I just took it out of her van today she complained of a kinda like a gas smell and I couldn't figure it out then I saw the handlebars. Cool vintage frame with working handbrake and throttle, good tires that hold air, front and rear shocks, engine is meh/has no compression and no spark. With Upcoming surgery, taking the physical and seeing doctors I forgot about it being in there.

All it needs is a 5/8 in shaft engine so I can use the same clutch It's not the original engine anyway I believe.

I can rebuild the old one maybe but it's only a non ball bearing crank 3hp briggs and Stratton and not worth the bother. (edited)

Bomb detonator? Yikes!

Yeah I found a accordion before too I sold it at a flea market for 60.00

Re: Free Pile finds while on a moped

like one of those little boxes with the t shaped twist handle. it has a little gearbox inside that spins a little magneto thing to make enough electricity to blow stuff up i guess. said "property of us military" on it.
