Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

Nathan Schmidt /

I'm assuming it has to do with engineering quality.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

Put a ten speed gearbox on your ped and there you go.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

It's simple really, more power, more gears, better aerodynamics, less weight. They made decent power, usually in the 18-20 HP range, at something like 16,000 rpms. The porting would be much more extreme than what you would find on a "kit", most likely were rotary inlet which gives you room on the cylinder for more ports. Those bikes in that video are all 6 speed, sometime around late 1970's-1980 (not sure the exact year) there was a rule change allowing only up to 6 gears. Prior to that, some of the 50cc GP bikes has as many as 14 gears.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

asking why a moped is not a grand prix race bike is like asking why your carolla isn't like a formula 1 car.

Derbi and Minarelli still make 6 speed 50-80cc grand prix race bikes.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

as does aprilia.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

Using the minarelli motor. Reiju also makes one using the am6 motor

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

Running one of those on the street and especially a little stop and go would be tedious

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

Do they always have to wear a huge backpack when they ride?

If you replaced that manual tranny with some dual variated, that'd be an awesome city ped.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

gpr are the hottest street bike- 3gears downshifts on every corner

also replacing manual with variated- what u talking about?

It's for aerodynamics, that's how they go so fast!!! PayPal me a few grand and I'll send you one so you can go really fast too!!!

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

just learn how to shift gears and youll understand the pleasure of diff power bands. 50 shiffties are nothing but fun in traffic. and nothig but problems in freeway. Opposed to variated stopping backlash due to solid drive- that is tedious in my eyes. its like "car enthusiast" complaining that they cant drive stick shift car in traffic. Best option at all get a wheelchair (edited)

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

Some late 50cc moped racing

what? no way. I mean traffic sucks in any vehicle, but revving and dumping through 3rd is the best part of a super fast 50 shifty.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

Just get real close ratio gears, build for 16,000 rpm and you can do this. These are a little higher strung than your shifty 50s.

These Racers are motorcycles w/ many gears.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

As they have 50cc they are mopeds, in holland you could get a license for it and drive one as a 16 year old. (Would be difficult but it is possible)

If I give you 3500 will it come filled with safe, nonflammable helium?

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

that backpack is not huge, just riders are small, like 11 years old!

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

yea check out the EMOT van veen kreidler engines. so much rad.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

ehhh, i've been riding my DT50 commuting the last couple days and i'm over it. having to shift 4 times to get up to 40 is a pain in the dick, slower than a kitted variated moped by a long shot just because you gotta spend most of your time shifting.

its fun if you're pounding it through the gears, revving 10k and stomping it, but its a pain in the ass if you're trying to putt along with traffic, digging out of 4000 rpm with no clutch slip and no torque, having to downshift constantly to find the power band.

1-2 wheelies and 55+ top speed at 10k is pretty nice though... for a 50

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

I've been riding my TS50 to work at least once a week for about 2 years. I am not even remotely tired of it.

I do ride it like an absolute asshole alot of the time though, there's an abandoned set of railroad tracks i can take for maybe 1/5th my ride from work too, i dunno that a moped would manage that as well though i did it on the last sachs a few times.

I rode my cub all the fuck over the place too. shifting away like a little shift monkey.

and the sachs shifter, man. 50 shifty. it's whatup.

although some days i much prefer the simplicity of just sitting down, twisting a throttle, and going where i want to.

they each got tons of fun to be had.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

eh i'm too old. time to buy a KLR and start wearing aerostitch onesies.

it would probably be more fun if my commute had interesting swoopey roads, womp-able train tracks and wasn't 25 miles of stop-and-go 50 mph slab.

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

Karolek to kurwa myman!

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

3:10 bunnyhops a motorcycle followed by a perfect 180, awesome video!

if i get that bike does it mean i can do all those tricks?

Re: Why cant moded 80cc 'peds do this?

AR80 has it all. love it. just need another rider or two :/

gonna take it to a track one of these days

or at least a KE100.

I feel your pain. I built my motobecane and now I am bored of mopeds. I posted a while back that the mb5 was slow but everyone gave me a hard time...
