New member, first time moped owner

I've been a fan of mopeds for a good long time, especially the highly modified ones (who isn't?). Long time car guy here, rode a motorcycle for a few years, wrecked, moved to somewhere with horrible roads and worse drivers so I sold it. Now I live 3 miles from work and my car is a gas hog, so this moped allows me to save lots of gas and keep the miles off my car. See? I did it for the environment!

It's a 1978 Puch Kromag, in great shape. Just needs a little cleaning up, but starts on the first pedal/kick, runs like a champ all the way up to 21 screaming miles per hour, and is a ton of fun. I don't want to mod it too much (I say that now...) but I would like to bump the top speed up to the 35mph range while maintaining reliability eventually. Looking forward to reading through tons of stuff on here and learning a lot.

Welcome...

I had a shop in CT, but had an unfortunate fire..

mopeds are addicting.

Lotta mods for PUCH, check the wiki. http://www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Category:Puch

Thanks! I've been browsing around and reading as much as I can, and I'm really looking forward to really stripping this bike down this weekend and just studying everything on it and learning all that I can. And of course, modding it a bit, tastefully.

Re: New member, first time moped owner

As president of Moped Army, I officially welcome you to the site.

Re: New member, first time moped owner

First thing I would recommend is to replace the tires and clean out the tank.

Check and see if you have one of the restricted models and go from there.

35mph is realistic and totally doable with a couple hundred dollars worth of parts.

15 bing+15 intake and a cheapo 100 kit plus a stockish performance pipe will give you 35+ easy.

Thanks for the tips. Mine runs great, starts on the first kick/pedal, and has a new plug but after reading around, this weekend I'm going to remove the carb and clean it and check the exhaust/exhaust port and make sure it's clean also. Judging by my top speed of about 21mpg I'm guessing I have one of the restricted models, so a few mild mods will definitely be in my future.

Any thoughts on regearing? I know 2 strokes like to rev pretty high but I was thinking regearing it slightly might bump up the top speed a bit and be slightly easier on the engine.

35mph is easily doable without a couple hundred of dollars. For a couple of hundred he can be doing 40-45. Like everyone said clean the tank clean the carb and derestict everything you should gain a few mph

Re: New member, first time moped owner

Welcome, Armon.

First, determine you don't have the 1hp cylinder by pulling the intake off and make sure there's not a restrictor in there. If there is, post a WTB ad for a puch high torque top-end.

You can reach 35mph on the stock 2hp cylinders pretty easily. (edited)

Re: New member, first time moped owner

Probably Fred /

Hopefully you don't have the one HP restricted cylinder Many times a kromag came with a 14 MM bing with a small jet and the crappy 212a atomizer, a intake that has a 8mm restrictor in it and a small front countershaft sprocket.

Take out the 8mm restrictor out of the intake, install a 222# atomizer and 64 jet(#64 jet with full air box and 2hp pipe)Replace front sprocket with 16 tooth.

Hopefully you don't have a restricted exhaust if so you have to see wiki to know how derestrict it.

I have an otherwise stock 2hp with a circuit pipe. I (178lb) GPS in at 38mph, and I think I'm still running a little lean at WOT. gotta upjet.

Same story here. I just picked up a Murray last week. I put on a high torque top-end I had sitting around, no headgasket, derestricted stock pipe, and a hi-flow filter. According to the stock speedo I was touching 37 the other day and I'm ~175lbs.

Welcome,Armon!Mopeds are usually a great enjoyment and release from stress for me. I hope they'll be the same for you. don-ohio (:^)

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up some carb cleaner and 2 cycle oil and then start taking things apart. I took the little body moulding off and saw some crud floating in the clear gas line, so that's definitely going to get cleaned out. Once I get the engine all cleared out (and determine if I have the 1hp model) I'll post as to how much it improves. Then I'll start my mods....

...which I say will be very mild, but knowing me in a few months I'll be trying to hit 70, because 60 won't be enough. ha! All in good fun.

70. probably not.

If you can get 70 out of a cromag, you will be getting some mad props around here. It would be a *very* different bike by that point though :)
