something in there is out of alignment, likely the crown gear isn't moving on the threaded shaft right but it being a tomos there are about 957 ways they won't engage.
take it apart, check everything, rebuild, repeat.
I was thinking he wiggled that wishbone looking thing out of its little housing, the one that sits on the collar on the pedal shaft.
Crazy because the wishbone is in its place.
I had one of those fail on me once - didn't break or anything, just got worn out. It looked fine, but it'd been stressed too much to provide enough tension to do it's job. Like when you bend a paperclip too much. Before it wore it out it started doing that thing where the starter tried to engage anytime you rolled it backward, no matter how gently. Got to the point where it would just lock up right after you kicked it backward to start.
I would replace that wishbone spring and order a new sprag clip... check that claw collar, make sure it is locking on properly to the pedalshaft... follow the engagement on the starting diagram (repair manual) that I linked you to on your repair forum thread.
do you have the spring on the pedal shaft between the pedal arm and tranny cover? that is really important to get the shaft to keep pressure on the shaft so when it rotates backwards the shaft shifts left to engage the motor.
Noel.. Didn't even think to ask that... Yeah that is crucial for pressure.
Blah blah blah..the teeth on your main drive gear may be stripped :(
.....not to mention your tomos is on its side and all the internals are put to one side
If you need any internal gears or parts, I have some.
Thanks folks...
This is really some BULLSH__!!!!!
Everything appears to be lined up right, even when I put the bike up on the center stand. Spring and pedal right..
I'm going to order a few of those countershaft clips (sprag clip) and reassemble.
Everything was working great before I opened up the tranny case to reline the clutches and change the spring. That's when I noticed the sprag clip in the case.
I'll wait and try again when I get those clips...
Every time that has happend to me it that gear
Between the cases that slides back in forth to
Engage the kick start from peddling mode.
The clip part of it falls out of its position. It usually
Happens when I would put it back together
Before I would put the clutch back in place and turn
The pedal shaft to kind of see if it would be working right.
I quit doing that because I would have to turn
Around and rebuild it. I gues it gave me a lot of practice.
Is the wish bone gear? I've heard it called
So many different things.
Hopfully all my babbling makes sense. Good luck.
Johnny its the claw collar and that wishbone is referenced s a spring. Yeah everytime I have rebuilt my clutches that damned thing falls out of its housing lol.
I love it when it falls out and when you
Start it up it spins the pedals like crazy
When give I throttle. I still stand back away even
When I know it's built right.
That looks to be the internal kickstart chain simply not on the gear. Happened to me a lot when not paying attention to that during installation of something tranny wise. Just put the internal chain back on it's gears and blast!
