preparation for long trip

Jake Van Order /

So there's all this talk about who can take the longest trip. And summer always brings out that urge inside our heads to try and take a small, 20 year-old 2 h.p. engine halfway across our respective states.

So is there anything special I should do in preparation to a moped for a long trip? What tools should I bring? Should I compensate for the fact that the engine is going to be running for quite some time?

Any miscellaneous tips?

Jake,

Make sure you have checked and lubed all bearings, wheels, steering head, pedal and clutch shaft, if you have them, freewheel, etc.

Check and lube all your cables, levers and any other attachments that look like they need it.

Do a plug chop and verify that your mixture is good.

Take enough tools with you to repair a flat tire and inflate it. A spare plug and plug wrench and enough wrenches to tighten things that may come loose. A small bottle of 2 stroke oil and some way to measure it.

Go riding and have fun.

Check for proper tire pressure, if you're packing extra weight (saddle bags or backpack) add a extra lb. or two of air.

Also for the added weight, check shock adjustment (make stiffer) if you have adjustable shocks.

Check and lube chain, you may have to re-adjust for the added weight.

Check transmission oil (might as well replace it with new).

If your ped has a battery, check electrolyte level and terminal connections.

Check that all the lighting is functional, carry extra bulbs.

If riding at night, have something reflective on your backpack and helmet, and some clear glasses/goggles. Also a small flashlight in the tool bag.

Raingear and extra clothes in a waterproof bag.

If you're crossing state lines, check their moped laws.

Snack food, (powerbar, beef jerky, etc.) and a bottle of water.

A cable or chain with lock.

Water pistol filled with ammonia within reach (for them damn dogs).

Aspirin and sun block.

Cell phone and credit card.

Check in with loved ones occasionaly.

Ride on.

i think you should bring as many tools as you can carry, the more the better. also you should bring a spare inner-tube and a tire patch kit and fix-a-flat. for food.....only beef jurky!!!! i love my beef jurky. and you should do everything these people are saying other then to carry a small bottle of 2 stroke oil...because i dont know the laws for where your at but it might be illegal. also VERY dangerous. if your ped decided to blow up and you had oil then it would just fuel the fire. oil isnt an explosive but is highly flamable (obviously). most gas stations or other places have oil....what kinda moped do u have????

Re: preparation for long trip

I have a newly purchased sachs carrier I. You can view it through my profile, it's a sweet little cherry. I just hope that the weather in west michigan improves by Sunday because 30 miles in 44 degrees is not pleasant. Neither is pneumonia.

Jake,

I travel about 95 miles to the bbq and what I listed is what I take. I do have a hand (bicycle style) pump for the tires.
