When you knew she was the one...

You know, that smooth caress... the way the variator pulled the engine into the frame, the vibrations, cutting each mirror close as you split lanes?

The moped that let me know she was the one was a VLX that I rode through Hollywood a few years ago... probably one of my fondest memories to date.

What moped told you she was the one?

I like the ones that are super fucked up. Rusty, crusty, locked wheel bearings. Those are the ones that are saying... "Hey we want to die, but for 5 bucks Ill hook you up with a handy if you give me a fix."

I knew my motron was the one when I broke her, and then fixed her, so on and so forth.

Mine was first and true still...my 103, I won't give up on her, even if I have to have others help get her strong again.

she had both keys and was unmolested w/550 miles

she was put into storage by an engine guy, in 82, i found her in 2010.

those french ones are so high maintenace, i traded her for the sturdy yugoslovian, she is way faster and way less demanding, it like the wife and the mistress.

i am hooked on Batavii tho, heck they are so smooth and simple, light. hi quality materials went into them.

Re: When you knew she was the one...

After about 130 failed relationships over the past 8-9 years, I am finally settling down with my Garelli SSXL. She doesn't ask for much and is always a cheap date. Similar to a kidnapped victim, she was tied up in a barn for several years in a horse and buggy town but $50 broke the shackles and set her free.

My mb5 is that bike for me. I've like it more every time I ride it. I couldn't imagine life without having it. It's a magical wonderful bike.

Re: When you knew she was the one...

i never had the chance to buy a VLX, some day, although i'll ride forever variated.

have I told any of you guys yet that my 64 Harley 50 is running now ?

Re: When you knew she was the one...

Due to the simple fact that more then a few people have asked that I should not bring up the subject of what I ride...So I won't !

Re: When you knew she was the one...

My first was a '77 Moby 50V. Pulled out of the dump, did a little fiddling, & with a new plug it ran, & ran great. Flushed the tank before running, but after that it was mint. Ran & rode BEAUTIFULLY.

Couple years later, the tank just finally rotted out & it became unsafe.

Re: When you knew she was the one...

My first was an old Sears Allstate 2 speed that I still have. Bought a Tomos new in 2005 & installed a 65cc kit immediately & from that day on I've been in love!

Re: When you knew she was the one...

The moment when I got to try out a Puch Maxi and a Motobecane 50V for the first time after getting fed up with a Happytime Motor Bicycle. I fell in love with french bikes in general, and have been pushing the limits of what they can do ever since.

The one I really loved got away...

It was a late 90's Tomos TTLX. A guy listed one on CL for $500 and said it had a parts bike. I called him and he sold me the parts bike for $100. Later that day i made it run! Rode it around for nearly 2 years (cheap 70 kit, tecno hunter pipe, 16/16 sha). It would never die. Super ratty, but fun as hell to ride. I only got rid of it in a trade for a derbi GPR50. Which was also an awesome bike but i really miss the tomos. Been a void in my heart ever since that one.

yeppers the 79 VLX was absolutely mint having everything, the little cable guides, the tire pump, toolkit, factory misprinted w on the frontplate, with title, ray parker, you're a good man, $100. he was the lawn and garden guy i bought it from, he is still holding a QT-50 for me in the same condition. his wife dumped on hers when they were riding. put both away in 82.

it was my find of a lifetime, as for ride of a lifetime, something about the batavus VA goin down a 12 mile 9% grade and pinning the speedo and wondering just how much braking room i would need to stop at the stop sign t intersection at the bottom,

or this is prolly it,

when i was caught on top of south mountain, a torrential rain storm kicked up i ran down the mt to lehigh universities access rd, s turns all the way down: to find they had just tarred and paved it a day ago, so all the oil floated to the roadsurface, i was riding an A3, omdg, i was goin about 30 when i realized at had no grip and brakes were not working and would spill it, i locked my elbows and lean steered the mile + salom to the bottom. i sheltered under a tree, i huffed down a joint and two smokes and was still shakin a half hour later.

You know the golden rule about the China Girl kits, right?

She'll keep you occupied, you'll have a lot of fun with her, but she'll end up breaking your heart at some point... because in the end, she's disposable. ;)

With a little work, the little bike engine kits can be made reliable. The stock bearings all around just blow for starters. With port work & associated dremel work they can be made to haul ass. The pic of the one in my profile did 42mph.
