think my TTLX base gasket's dead

i was riding home last night, got to just about to my street and the Tomos died. engine tone didnt change, just sputtered out like it was out of gas, i had filled up that morning and hadnt ridden very far, so i knew fuel wasnt the problem (carb was recently rebuilt too). when i tried to restart the bike it revved and then backfired twice (like vrrrrrrrrurrurr PAM! PAM!) this of course scared the shit outta me, so i pedaled it home. i made my own base gasket for the cylinder out of automotive head gasket material, so i think it may have bit the dust, backfiring was probably caused by such a LEAN mixture coming out of the crankcase the hot cylinder walls caused it to preignite. it rained HARD today and i dont have a garage, so i didnt get to taking apart the top end, im going to tomorrow afternoon when i get home from school.

when i turn it over without the kill switch on, i hear a "tink tink tink tink tink" noise, im PRAYING thats not because of dead crank end roller bearings, and its just compression wheezing out the busted gasket (its $99.95 for a new A3 crankshaft at moped junkyard! but like 3.95 for a base gasket). when i order the new gasket (or crank if it needs it) im gonna get a new speedometer drive, mine is wibbly wobbly (all over the place) and i think the drive is worn out.

Re: think my TTLX base gasket's dead

Garrett, that could be a little shot of water in the fuel or bad spark plug.Check out the simple things first.Didn't get rain in the air filter did you?Hope it's not a busted piston or crank. It probably isn't if you've kept your oil ratio right.

Re: think my TTLX base gasket's dead

nope, no water, like i said, id filled it up that morning, and i always cover it when it rains. i think it was that half-assed gasket finally giving out. i REALLY doubt its the piston, i just honed the cylinder and replaced the rings, so it BETTER not be that. when i first got the ped, a so/so oil injector about KILLED the piston, and the wrong type of transmission fluid killed all the bearings in it (i replaced them ALL, EVERY bearing in that engine) i remember the mechanics at my local shop saying somthing about the roller bearings in the end of the crank (this was about 400miles ago) i dunno tho, like i said, if it aint raining like today was, its comin apart.

im gonna go down to the local motorcycle dealer and pick up a few bottles of synthetic 2 stroke oil. even though the "natural" type oil ive been using is Valvoline 2 stroke motorcycle oil (a brand i trust a LOT) at the recommended 50:1 ratio with the amount specified on the bottle, i think synthetic may be better for this older engine.

im headin 2 bed now, gettin REEEEALY sleepy

Check spark anyway,Garrett.

If you're sure it's not water, just check the spark anyway, okay?I was thinking about that ting, ting, ting noise you're getting. You could have sheared a flywheel key or flywheel came loose. You might find it's a real simple problem. The base gasket can be made out of ordinary gray gasket material. It's the head gasket (if you have one)that has to be made out of good stuff. But you could be right.Hope it's something simple,so you can `ped til yer red',Garrett!Go ahead and go to bed.I gotta stay up all night and work.BUMMER! (:^)

Re: think my TTLX base gasket's dead

I used the wrong transmission fluid (dextron) for about a mile, or two. Do you think I ruined anything? I am now using type Fa

Re: think my TTLX base gasket's dead

No,that wouldn't matter,ToeHead!Just keep puttin' the right stuff in there from now on.

Re: think my TTLX base gasket's dead

Whats wrong with dextron mercon 3? I thought thats what you were supposed to use.

According to the manual, you are.

In practice, now...

Some use Type-F, Some use Dexron III, some use 10w30 Motor Oil.

It all depends on what YOUR moped responds better with.

Re: think my TTLX base gasket's dead

Walker, I think Toehead has a Puch. Have no fear bro.

D'oh!

Reeperette /

Yeah, Puch uses Type-F.

Thought he was talkin bout a TTLX, as per the resta the thread.

Helps a lot when folks specify what 'ped they're talkin about, don't it ?

Re: D'oh!

Hey, I use the type F in all my Tomos`s, If you need a crankshaft for the A-3 engine, I have one and other parts, (clutch assembly new) and will treat you fair. May want to ck the flywheel, may have sheared pin off if got loose, like the guys ck the easy stuff first. Doug D.
