whats the best paint for customizing my helmet

I got a bell custom 500 ride free matte black solid if it matters. Nothing to fancy just some lettering on it. Want to do white paint. Can I just paint right on it or should I sand it or put down a primer? Thanks for any info.

Thanks for all the replies and that thread was cool. All I'm looking to do is paint my name on the back of my helmet but leave the rest black.

electro has a point.

Not that it'd really make a difference in your decision, but this is from bell's website.

"PAINTING

Paint can react with helmet shell material and affect its protective capacity. Although the outer shell of the helmet is constructed of thermo set composite materials and finished with a polyurethane coating and although it can theorically be repainted with high quality air drying acrylic or polyurethane enamel, we do not recommend to have the helmet decorated by an independent painter. We often see helmets decorated by independent painters being damaged during the painting process. In no case should the helmet be dismantled during painting. Paint requiring heat curing should not be used. Paint penetrating the interior of the helmet can affect the performances of the helmet liner and other components.

all that does is releases companies from liability if you go and paint your helmet the helmet fails and you try to sue. they will point out "look see we said dont paint it."

How about "magic markers"?

I tend to find modern helmet graphics a bit too dense, 'ragged' and busy.

Preferring the oldie simpler styles.

Mmmmmmmmmm....

Helmet graphics design thread, anyone?
