Electric power moped...would you drive one?

Alonzo Branson /

This question makes several presumptions--that power cell capacity and charge speed along with charging stations have made the necessary breakthroughs to where you can drive the same distance on one charge that we currently do with a tank of gasoline.

If such tech existed and an electric moped were introduced, would you drive one? Or, would we stick to internal combustion and all that entails because of the appeal of being your own mechanic? (there's a LOT to be said for that last part...it is rather fun, ain't it?)

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

Talk about a torque monster if someone made one

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

I'd RIDE one sometimes.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

I would also ride one,

but only for fun.

It's been done

Right Here

jeez that thread kinda died off.

whatever happened to that electrobecane?

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

True, but remember that my OP presumed that you can get a full charge in the same time that it would take to re-fuel with gas.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

HA IF... marc has two

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

it doesn't take any time at all to re-fuel, i never even stop at the gas station

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

Alonzo Branson /

Truly? How long to charge up, then?

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

180+ mpg on my stock moby 50v. Beat that with a battery.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

Is that City or on the road ?~Fuel cells are on thre way !~

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

1200 miles, 0 gallons....beat

i've almost finished my breakin! (edited)

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

If I could recharge it in somewhere around the same amount of time (and price) it takes me to fill up my tank. If i would only need to recharge it every 100 miles or so. If I could find a used one on CL for a few hundred bucks. If it did 45mph or so. If I could hop it up and customize it. If it didn't weigh a shit ton. If it didn't look stupid.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

I would ride one for sure, no good for long range, (yet), but I don't go very far, 20-30 mile range would work for me. Easy store inside,(no gas). No bs carbs to fuck with. On the other hand, they would be boring and quiet, and no smoke...If it would run 30-40mph, yeah for sure. I would not get rid of my gas powered bikes though. I think they make an electric scooter that is close to this already. Someone posted about one, but I have never seen one on the road.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

I have considered a cheap sloppy lead-acid build, but at this point, the only electric moped I would consider owning would require a grand in lithium batteries. As an aside, I saw a cordless hammer drill at a local hardware store. Brand name escapes me (common one though) but it was priced at 1000 $US (850 euro). 36 or 48 volt lithium.

Enjoy.

Sure, I'd ride an electric, especially with the OP's parameters. I rode a puny Ford made folder for awhile, just for fun, no commuting. It was zippy. Not a fast charger though and it was burdened with all sorts of gee whiz tech brainery. It died one morning, never to reawken.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

Bought two - fun to ride, in Ontario Canada they are not required to be licensed so that fun.

Unless you like to pedal, it sucks if you are going further then the range or maybe want to perhaps go further then the range because it is not like you can pull up at a 'electric station' for a refill. Same if your fancy battery pack is somehow depleted by forgetting to turn off the headlight, or you decide to take a short side trip and you use up your fuel earlier then expected...

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

I'd rather pollute with two stroke than with a battery pack.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

I saw a show on tv (granted, it was anti-green movement) about the amount polloution created and how many resources that are depleted in the production of the Prius battery. Unless they're lying, it's ridiculous.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. I think the Lithium is recoverable and it is expensive, just like the platinum in the cat converter. The real question is ultimately what resource you use to recharge all those batteries. In my neighborhood there is a guy with total solar who has a Nissan Leaf sitting outside his house being charged off the solar array on his roof. My understanding is that the guy has NO hookup to city utilities and his house is 100% run off renewable energy. Many of my neighbors have solar, but it is augmented with city power. I noticed at least a DOZEN (probably more like two dozen) different LED light bulbs for sale at the local hardware store the other day. About ten euro each. They were thirty euro each a couple years ago and there were only a couple for sale. They seem to be running in the one watt to seven watt variety. People conserve the hell out of electricity here in Germany. It costs three times as much as the US. Rather than destroy the German economy, all these socialist power schemes and rampant union employment seem to be having the exact opposite effect as Germany is the only country in Europe with an economy worth a crap. Enjoy.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

needs more juice. i9 like refilling in under a minute... gas ftw

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

If you don't have any kids you can do a lot of polluting and still have less of an impact

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

Those batteries can be recycled into meth, then meth monkeys can build more motorized bicycles and become flesh eating zombies. Fuck yeah electric powar

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

Damn skippy I'd ride one! Be a great commuter because I wouldn't have to gas up each morning. I'd still ride my two stroke for fun, but daily commuting a plug-in electric would be awesome.

BTW, sorry I posted the "Electric...?" thread before seeing this one.

...wasn't even considering the enviro crap. I just like the torque curve.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

there was a guy at our rally last summer in chicago with a crazy electric moped, I think it was a magnum or a 5 star with a HUGE brick of fuel cells under the tank which I think was still there for show, i dont know, it's been a long time... anyways I think he was an engineering student. it was peppy and it was a cool thing to see but without a piston that is actuated by a pedal mechanism then what's the point? I'd ride one purely as a commuter I guess... but I dont think that I would have very much fun working on it.

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

i had an EVT168 1500watt electric scooter which was an ugly geely chinese vespa looking thing that was made into an electric by another company in taiwan

i bought it from a guy for $100 with dead batteries then i bought 4 wheelchair batteries for $265 from batteries plus

i hard wired the batteries in with #4 wire instead of using the crappy connectors

the scoot worked great did about 40 miles on a charge at 35mph but would do 45mph and felt really odd goine that fast in dead silence the only noise it made was the tires on the road it took a few hours to charge but those hours i was usually messing around anyway

i really liked it i found myself riding that thing more than my moped or driving my car

when i had to move i sold it to some dude in boston he offered me $600 for it so it sold

i think some day when i have the money il build a 5000 watt electric scoot with like 80ah of LiFePO4s

Re: Electric power moped...would you drive one?

Andrew Browning /

ill ride anything with wheels that i dont have to pedal.

or push
