Should my first moped be able to seat two?

Hey all,

I live in the Boston area and am currently looking for my first moped to get around town. It looks like it's legal to have a passenger on a moped here though please correct me if that's wrong. I'm wondering if there are any strong opinions about what the best options are. So basically, what moped(s) are beginner friendly and can hold a passenger? What's the deal with long seats, are they made for two people or are they just more comfortable for some reason? Would I need pegs? Is it even a good idea to ride with a passenger?

I thought being able to seat another would be a lot more practical in the long run, but if it's not recommended, I'll take any advice on getting a a first moped. I've already read the wiki's guide to buying a first moped.

I should also add that I currently bike around a lot so I'm not a complete newbie to riding/cycling. Really looking forward to sweating less!

Need pegs and a nice long seat.....

Moby's have some nice long ones....and riding doubles leads to romance.

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

I got my first moped, a Vespa Grande, early last year. Thing did doubles easy peasy. Riding doubles does lead to romance, as I now have a beautiful daughter with my doubles partner.

Just one of the unseen side effects of riding 2 up.

Can they really hold dubs? My Puch Maxi has the long seat, but I think if I had a passenger I'd be going 7mph?

Yes, my friend rode me 10 miles through Queens and Brooklyn on the back of his magnum two weeks ago. He's 180 lbs I'm 165. We cracked 30 mph.

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

I did 20 miles offroad on my kitted Grande doing doubles. We still went low 40s

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

Mopeds are not really built for this, it can be done, get a 50v or a Vespa, not a (caio)...it must be robust, and you and said passenger must not be big people. I rode doubles all the time in high school, now to big for that. You do need footpegs.

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

nah bro, ciao + dr kit + old malossi too bad + polini var. + tomos st seat = sexy sex. and 103 forks, just for the french-ness.

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

i think it's mandatory that everyone have a ped for riding dubs with babes... it should be variated or kitted and tuned for low rpm power (acceleration). or both could be best... I've found that riding dubs doesn't kill much top speed; acceleration is where you will notice the difference. also pegs for your partner are actually a legal requirement in many states but "pegs not included" on peds.

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

I can buy a jump seat for my Tomos Quadro for less than twenty bucks from my Tomos dealer, but it is not a very comfortable looking affair. There is a jump seat on a Tomos just like mine that sits outside the Thunderbird Cafe in Enschede (NL) that has a nice one. I want to find one like it or change my seat into a longer seat so I can get my wife to ride with me.

Enjoy.

Is it legal in ny to ride double on a ped?

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

call your secretary of state or look at their website... it should say on there as well as give all the other laws involving mopeds... like here it is illegal to ride double, a moped is classified as a 2 or 3 wheeled vehicle that is 50ccs or lower that does not get more than 30 mph.... but these laws seem to be being broken as most newer peds that are getting registered go 35 to 40......

oh and you cant ride on the sidewalk :P

thats just here in michigan, but it should all the information for you on the website.

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

if you have a babe then get one for dubs. but make sure it can handle it or you will be eating your motor all day at 20mph.

Ok, so it looks like the best options are the Vespa Grande, Motobecane 50v, or the really awesome looking Puch Magnum (this thing looks super awesome!). Vespa Si and Bravo seem good but no one mentioned them. Thoughts on Tomos?

Is it possible to put a variator on a ped that doesn't come stock with one? I wouldn't want to do this anytime soon but am curious.

Also just double checking, when people say Moby or 50v, they're referring to to the Motobecane Mobylette 50v right?

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

Yes to moby.

Nuts gets cold on magnum tank, but it a big bike..

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

Get a moby

Sweet, smooth and stable.

And I think, if you consider the generosity of Rebelmoby with his knowledge

their reputation for being persnickity has been somewhat overblown.

Re: Should my first moped be able to seat two?

my wife hates moped, until i took her for a ride on the moby.....now i cant get rid of her :(
