stupid question? - moped with belt drive conversion

Chris Davis /

could a moped be converted to belt drive like some of the newer motorcycles?

just wondering... Might be nice to get rid of that nasty oily chain...

is this possible?

Re: stupid question? - moped with belt drive conversion

lots of mopeds are already belt drive dude.

Re: stupid question? - moped with belt drive conversion

really? Converted or stock?

Stock.

Tahdur!

Re: stupid question? - moped with belt drive conversion

Quite a few mopeds were belt drive stock. A belt drive conversion could be done, although you will loose a little more power due to drive-train losses. Its tough to beat the efficiency of a chain drive.

Re: stupid question? - moped with belt drive conversion

only mopeds that have belt drive = Honda (pa50 series, camino, "hobbit") and

vespa ( caio, bravo, grande ect)

please enlighten me if there are more

Re: stupid question? - moped with belt drive conversion

Kinetic, but I guess that falls under Vespa sorta.

Re: stupid question? - moped with belt drive conversion

What about pug? mobys? Bats? Minnerellis?

Re: stupid question? - moped with belt drive conversion

The difference here is in the gear reduction before or after the belt. Some mopeds have no internal gear reduction (motobecane, peugeot, batavus m48) and use a chain for the final reduction. Some have no internal reduction and use a gear reduction inside the rear hub (Honda Pa50, Piaggio mopeds). Some have an internal gear reduction as well as a final chain reduction (Derbi, Minarelli C2). Almost nothing since the early days runs a belt drive without any additional reduction, probably since it requires a great big pulley, is susceptible to slipping when wet.

I got yer belt drive right here.

But some purists will tell you it's not a moped.

Edit: There's a primary belt from the engine to a jack shaft. It's under the pretty cover. The reduction is in the two different sized pulleys. So it's actually a dual belt drive. (edited)

BTW There is no stupid question.

Just stupid people.

But seriously: Yes it's possible and not an entirely bad idea. Just be ready fabricate, hack, weld, drill, mill and tool to get it done.
