Puch Maxi Luxe noises

Hey all,

Got an internal question. When my puch is ideling it makes this weird knocking sound. But when i give it a smig of throttle it goes away and it pretty quiet. I dont know how else to explain it besides a knocking. Also. At high speeds it starts this odd, almost non explainable sound when shes wide open . It starts out slow ( the sound that is ) but the as i neer closer to 30ish it picks up. Start out almost like im smacking the side of the engine with a screw driver about 5 times a second, then when im going down a hill it will really pick up in speed and noise ( again, the sound not the ped)

Anybody ever hear this before on their ped? Is it common? HOW CAN I MAKE IT STOP!!

My Puch does the knocking noise at idle.... but it doesn't do the high speed thing. CHECK YOUR PLUG!!!

Sounds like yer runnin lean to me....

How many miles does your bike have?

2257 miles. What do you mean my plug? Just replace it or what? Its a nice brown color so i dont think im running lean.

BTW- Do u have any HP stuff for sale for the puchs?

mine does the knocking at idle too. It also has almost the same noise, but only when you run under heavy load. and my plug is tan too.

My maxi luxe made the same noise at full throttle...Then I discovered that I had a crack in my crank case and there wasn't any tranny fluid in it! Yikes! I don't know if that's it though, because I haven't ridden my puch since I fixed the crankcase. Maybe check your fluid just in case.

There is a drain screw on the bottom of the crank case, too bad I found that out after I drained it. You might want to open up the case and check to see if the starter is sticking, I had to do this a few times.

But, I have the same problem when I start getting around 25mph or goin down a hill.

Sounds like you need a "Top end" overhaul. The noise you describe at idle is "Piston slap". It is caused by the bushing inside the piston end of the connecting rod. This bushing should be round but can become elongated due to wear or heat. This bushing is what the wrist pin fits in to hold the piston to the connecting rod. If the bushing becomes elongated, it will allow the piston to wobble at low rpms, thus you hear a "slapping noise". As you increase the rpms centrifugal force causes the piston to remain straight and not wobble, thus the noise goes away.

You could also have more serious problem if the lower bearings where the connecting rod attaches to the crank shaft are worn.

My advice is you can afford it, buy that rebuilt engine Ike has for sale for about $200 and see if he will give you something for trade in on your old engine. Or you can buy the parts and do it your self if you have the tools, a manual or the know how.

Third option is to ride it till it dies.
