What does it take to run a moped shop?

I've been tossing around the idea of opening a moped shop, here in St. Pete FL, where I live. I'm not a super badass moped builder or whatever, but I'm noticing the amount of attention we get riding ours around town. People always ask us, "OMG! What are those!? Where can I get one!? How much do they cost?!" Seriously, every time we get hounded by, what I see as, possible customers.

The people who already have them around here, seem to be completely useless, when it comes to working on them. So, a service department already has waiting clientele.

I feel like I could fill a void in the local moped market, in my area(downtown.) There is really only one shop that sells mopeds(only new tomos), but they're in a shitty, not really moped friendly area of town. They're also a bike shop that sells scooters and mopeds.

I'd like to open a moped only shop, that feels more like a skate shop, than a "dealership."

I have the knowledge and skills to powder coat as well, which could easily be something I could offer through the shop.

I guess I'm just looking for some kind of guidance from some of you that already own or have owned a moped shop.

Thanks,

Garcia

You will starve to death, think of another option to make money.

I already own a business, seems to be doing well so far. I'll be renting a storefront for it soon, figured I could run a moped shop in the same location. Kinda merge my two favorite things to do. You know, live happy and stuff.

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

I'm thinking a moped strip club...

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

you cant merge erotic cakes and mopeds... it just doesnt work

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

You'll need another job to actually support yourself.

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

You do the wenching and have your woman collect the labor money.

That way all your bros will hate her and not you.

^^^That's what I'm talking bout. Thanks, i'll look into what type of insurance is needed and the cost.

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

it's basically like your a motorcycle shop with it's balls cut off. you have pretty much the same expenses, but you don't get paid as much. everybody knows if your moped breaks down, you just read the wiki and make a post on the repair forum, and then, just all of a sudden, it works again, and goes even faster.

it would be awesome tho. you could pull it off if you moved to india.

I understand your point. Even though the wiki exists and it's usually something they can fix themselves, they still call me to help. These peeps don't know jack about working of stuff.

If your not selling mopeds. I don't think you need much. But I m not sure.

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

every asshole on the street always asks "where you get dat?" and "how much you pay fo dat?" just because they're curious doesn't mean they're gonna buy one. even if they were gonna buy one, everyone has equal access to craigslist.

as for repairs, the other shops you mentioned are diverse because that's what it takes to actually make money. there are a lot more scooters on the road then mopeds. It would be financial suicide for a moped mechanic/shop to not work on either scooters or bicycles too. especially if you're paying for an expensive retail/store front instead of a cheap garage or warehouse space. which is all you really need. I always figured it would be smart to work on scooters. That way you could gouge them for like $100 to "Summerize" their bikes. New plug, cleaned carb, new fuel line...

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

Starter money. New tomos dealership approval.

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

^yes that. If you own a business already, you know this. I hope you make a go of it. Mopeds are a very niche thing, no matter how many you see, they are a very small segment of the motoring public. If I were you I would offer scooter repair as well, that would get a lot more people in your door. Have Mopeds avail for sale, (dealers liscence is a spendy thing), but then people would see them, want them etc.

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

Probably Fred /

So true ^^ if you were to charge what motorcycle shops charge to fix a moped/rebuild the engine it would average cost about 500.00 per bike

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

Ive also looked into it John and its not worth the time and money. Moped riding seems to be seasonal as well here in florida. I truly believe that you would start out really well and then the business would die off within 6-8 months. I resorted to just offering repairs and stuff out of my shop in the backyard which you saw. No overhead and plenty of room. Im not going say its a BAD idea but unless youre willing to put out a lot of money, time, and patience... there are other things to invest in. Also remember that once a hobby turns into a business, most people seem to lose the love for the hobby now that they rely on it. I speak from experience :) (edited)

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

if you do start a shop you will need to film pornos in it.

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

It seems like a moped shop depends financially on rich hipsters who want to have a cool looking thing, but don't want to work on it, BUT who also have the financial resources to do shit like that. Typically they have lots of toys and gadgets. So the question is; do you have a lot of those around?

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

John Garcia /

St. Pete is filled with Hipsters with money, which are equally lazy. The store front will be my sign shop, but I'll have a warehouse portion to wrap vehicles, so I could easily slang some mopeds out of the same shop.

Onell, you couldn't be more right, about the hobby turned job = loss of fun and increase of stress.

Maybe, I'll just have a couple used mopeds for sale at the sign shop. If they sell, sweet...if not, I still have a couple mopeds to ride.

I'd suggest getting a good hard drug habit.

At least you would smile on the way down once in a while.

Re: What does it take to run a moped shop?

you need to have a parts party... with partyiing parts that love to go wild. it can be a private parts party too... not be confused with a pants party. but there can be a parts party in the pants but that is something completely different.
