Re: cafe racer welding

dude! use cromo (no homo)

Re: cafe racer welding

just go to your nearest fallen down building and look for the steel you need... if the scrappers havent gotten it first

Crossbar? Use a fence post. they're are cheap. Be sure to grind off the galvanized shit before you weld.

Re: cafe racer welding

Measure the radius on your tank channel. Then buy a pipe that is the same putter diameter as that in the correct length. Don't use a fucking fence post. There will most likely be compound bevels on both ends of your new pipe thy will take a bit of brain power to figure out for a good fitment. So don't just go starting in on hacking it up. Stand back and think about it for a second. Use a mild steel pipe.

Re: cafe racer welding

typically somethin large grained, looks like this

makes for good welding.

Re: cafe racer welding

I used a fence post. It worked fine for me.

Re: cafe racer welding

galvinized stuff melts like butter, and emits good smells, drink your milk folks

Re: cafe racer welding

So fence posts are all the rage, huh? Ok.......

Re: cafe racer welding

Actually, use multiple rolls of tinfoil packed really tight. Then used duct tape to hold the pieces together. At the ends, use zip ties to hold it to your frame.

Buying small quantities of metal can be a pain in the ass. Metal supply shops are not set up for us, and big box hardware shores have shit for selection and outrageous prices. I wouldn't rule out ebay, you can get some small pieces of good tubing for a reasonable price sometimes. DOM is best. I would look for something thicker than 14g.

Zinc oxide poisoning from welding galvanized metal is inconvenient. Like a shitty hangover. I don't know if I buy the whole story about milk protecting you from it...

There is little/no information about long term negative effects of zinc oxide. It's an ingredient in children's cereal and sunscreen, yes?

I'd make a mock-up out of a cardboard tube to get practice figuring out the bevels n' shit. When you get that right, copy it onto steel. You can roll a cardboard tube of any diameter you want. So much easier to wreck that with a mistake and start another one in cardboard than to wreck a steel on and have to start over.

Re: cafe racer welding

Milk does nothing except give you something to throw up on your shoes. If you are welding galv, make sure to wear the proper repirator.

I use mild steel. I buy a 4ft section and is an angle grinder to shape it.

We did it, no one got sick. Just saying. We was tryin to get high off the zinc oxide and but that shit was wack, didn't feel a thing.

I was sure to get all the galvanize coating well off the part near where we welded.

This.

jUST WELD IT IN THERE!

Re: cafe racer welding

Don't even bother with galvanized, a lot of that fence post stuff is pretty thin walled anyway. Check your local steel supplier for scraps.
