Moped? What the hell is a moped?

Corrupted Bob /

What exactly IS a moped? Is it just a small motorcycle, or a big bicycle? And don't give me a fancy

answer like, "A moped is a higher form of transportation that transcends all reality. All hail mopeds!"

I want a real answer; like a definition. I looked in the dictionary and all it said was

'motorized two wheel vehicle'.

So, Mr. Expert Men, give me a better definition. NOW.

RE: Moped? What the hell is a moped?

The first mopeds were just bicycles with a little sputtering engine to help going forward. As the quality of the engines became better they made special frames for motorized bicycles. Now most mopeds don't have pedals anymore, pedals have become obsolete. The moped has evolved into an inbetween form of a bicycle and a motorcycle, but it's neither one.

RE: Moped? What the hell is a moped?

Moped nowadays is a downsized version of motorcycle. It is downsized in everything: the engine, the frame, the wheels and in other things. The engine displacement of the moped cannot be over 50 cc -- 60cc vehicles are considered light motorcycles in most of the countries and require different license. Modern mopeds tend to have all of the motorcycle features - 4-speed gearbox and more, disk brakes, turn signals, etc, so the only difference is size, engine displacement>power>speed. One of the major advantages that the moped has inherited from the bicycle is a simplified registration and driver licensing procedure. Laws differ from state to state but in other countries, e.g. in Russia, moped is not subject for registration and licensing at all! It cannot be driven by persons aged under 14.

Any more questions?

haha.... cool.... that was funny Simon!

RE: Moped? What the hell is a moped?

Here in California it's defined as any two or three wheeled vehicle having an engine of a maximum 2HP which has pedals for propulsion. This also applies to any bicycle with a motor attached. Mopeds do fall under the category of "motorized bicycle" here.

There are more laws concerning registration and equipment that apply. Registration is six bucks the first time and is good for as long as you own it. No annual fees.

Indeed moped do transcend the existential joining one with the universality of creation, at 30MPH, max.
