Grande bent handle bars

The handle bars on my Vespa Grande are slightly bent and I don't like it. The left handle bar is bent back towards the the seat a little, causing it to be wierd to ride. Me and Casey are going to try and bend them back straight, while still mounted to the bike. We plan to use broot force. :) You think that will work? Will it make the bars weak? If that isn't a good idea, then I was hoping that there might be someone out there who has a set of Grande handle bars for sale. Or if there is another moped brand that will match up. I want to keep the same size because of the way the speedo mounts to the bars. It is a floating system mounted on each bar by a simple clamp. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Head out to your local bike shop... The can bend 'em back for ya or get you a new pare of motorcycle bars... Just about any size will fit and long as it is the same Diameter. I will be getting a new handlebar for my Puch soon that is slightly longer (for nav equipment), so if you want, I will send you my old set for postage. They are straight as can be, but the chrome has flaked off in a few spots and could use some chrome paint or a recrome job.

Lemme know... I think the Puch as 7/8 in bars. Measure yours, and if they match up, you can have my old ones.

Re: Grande bent handle bars

Thanks Shane. My concern is the distance between the handle bars. My speedo has to mount on both sides to the bars. Hopefully, Casey and I can bend them back. Is it common for a bike shop to bend handle bars? Do they have special tools?

take the bars off, clamp them to a vise and put a pipe on the end of the bar and just bent it back. make sure the pipe is like 2-3 feet long

Ahh.. I see. Yes, they should be able to do it though. All ya really need is some clamps mounted to a bench, maybe a rubber mallett, and some arms.... you may also want to heat it up if you have a torch... they will bend easier then, but be very careful. I burned the hell out of my leg one day when I tried to fix a pedal arm.

Re: Grande bent handle bars

Good Idea chuck! I am going to try to do it on the bike first though. Kind of using the ped as a vice. The bar is a good idea!

Chris,

I have done this several times with motorcycle bars. Don't ask why.

The most important thing is to figure out exactly where you need to bend the bars and make sure you only bend them there. Look carefully at what part of the ped will take the strain if you bend them on the ped. If you have any doubt about that bending or straining something else, take them off.

I have had good success using big pipe wrenches and lots of rags wrapped around the bars. Keep them as snug as possible to prevent the corners of the jaws from digging in. If you use a vise, use rags in the jaws and make sure you can pull against the jaws in line with the slide, don't expect the jaws to grip enough to prevent you pulling the bars out or you will damage them. Sometimes, a piece of pipe just larger than the bars, about 1" water pipe, can be used to bend, or just to stop the bars from rotating in the vise while you bend.

Just look at it carefully before you start and you should be fine.

Yeah, at one time in my life, I though elbow grease was a real product. :)

Re: Grande bent handle bars

You can do it with the handle bars on the bike.

One guy on each side. One holding the opposing handle bar and then other guy pulling on the handle bar to be straightened. My son and I straighten ours that way. Eat a bowl of Wheaties first.

I would suggest you loosen one side of the speedo mount when you do this and then reattach when you get the handle bars aligned like you want them.

Re: Grande bent handle bars

Thanks for the vote of confidence Zippy! Plus, I would have never thought to take of the speedo first....Good lookin' out!

Attached, is a pic of my new Vespa. Check it out.
