good way to clean tank??

i have a honda pc50 and the tank is a thick syrup mess i need to get this crap out..what would be the best way?? oh allso this bike use to have a front fairing i guess you would call it but it was cut off..where can i find one of these??

Re: good way to clean tank??

To get the varnish out of the tank use M.E.K., available anywher they sell paint.

For rust, use the search feature here with the words "rusty tank" or "tank cleaning".

This topic has come up before and is well covered.

That's some strong stuff don,

cut the fur right off a fish!

Re: good way to clean tank??

Yep! It'll take the varnish out all right, like Jim said.Xylene(Xylol) works well too,but I don't know if they've outlawed it yet or not.I used to use a lot of that.I've got a bike that still has some varnish in it,so I guess I'll find out.

Re: M.E.K.

Don:

The can usually says M.E.K. in big letters, with the Methyl Ethyl Ketone spelled out below.

I've always been able to find it by asking for M.E.K.

As far as Xylene is concerned, it may still be available. Benzene is the stuff they have pretty much done away with.

Better life through chemistry!

Re: M.E.K.

Oh!I didn't know they put the abbreviation on the can.Yeah, some chemicals are necessary. The earth can do a pretty good job of cleaning itself up.I guess God knew we'd be messy and allowed for it.Ha!Used to use a lot of trichlorethene here at the plant to degrease and whatnot, but it's been banned for years, along with carbon tetrachloride and similar. They are allowed to use some Hexane and Freon 113 to substitute, but not much.I wear a lot of protection, including a half-face vapor canistered mask when I even work around the house with that stuff.Only got one set o' lungs! It can enter thru the skin too.Solvents are bad business for human tissue.

Tell me about it, I used to work security at a plant where they made Titanium Dixoide, and some of the by-products of the other processes were nasty stuff, Chlorine, Titanium TetraChloride aka Tickle, which'll kill ya right quick, Sulfur by-products I will not name, etc.

Funny how they talked about how "safe" it was for the neighborhood downwind, when on the rounds I would see whole flocks of birds dead on the ground from tryin to overfly the plant....yeah, safe allright....

Glad I moved outta that city.

Re: M.E.K.

I've never heard of Titanium Tetrachloride and I'm glad we don't have it here,Ree.What I will tell you is that I'm sitting about 6 ft. from a pipe containing some stuff that'll burn your skin off WHILE it poisons and asphyxiates you.The good thing is that if 0.1 ppm of it gets loose, your nose'll krinkle up while you're runnin' out the door. That's way before you get to a life-threatening level.I'm sitting about 25 ft. from 190 degree Hydrofluoric acid, which is a sure killer. So they pay me well to watch things here, and I take my job seriously. You know, the funny thing is,they put Titanium Dioxide in candy.Go figure!

Heh

That's exactly what "Tickle" does, in the same concentrations....we had 5 minnit escape respirators, which I carried two of, figurin I could toss one to some fool who'd lost/forgotten his as I bolted to my 'ped....it bein right next to my post at all times, heh.

Let other folks run, I woulda hopped on that sucka and lit her up.

Re: good way to clean tank??

thanx alot everyone i will get my tank cleaned out as soon as i get home from work tommarow

Re: Heh

Right,Ree!I can exactly relate to that. You got NO time to get out. It's everyone for themselves,`cause those who've stopped are already gonna die and if you stop for more than a second, you're a statistic.Where I'm sitting,my life would be determined by wind direction, barring direct intervention by the Almighty. From a certain direction,I'm probably dead. From the other directions,I may have a chance. This is a secure installation, so I can't bring my `ped or car near it,but I run pretty fast for almost 50 yrs.old!I've got 13 yrs. vested in this job toward retirement, and I'll report even the slightest hint of it I detect for everyone's and my safety.I don't want to end up on Wayne's notorious `mopeder's death' list.HaHa!Where IS that guy anyway? (:^)
