Got it! Did it! Gonna run it!

GOT IT: ALL the parts I needed to fix that tranny on the Franco-Morini....DID IT!:Installed the new starter clutch bearing and shims and washers and things AND GOT MY 60cc polini kit INSTALLED!!.....GONNA RUN IT!!:Started it up on the fourth kick!Ran it on the stand for five minutes and shut it off.Let it cool for 10 or 15 min. and started it on the FIRST kick.Ran it for a few mins. and shut it off.I'm stuck on Day shift `til Sun.eve.,and even though I have to work 12 hrs. nightshift Mon.thru Wed.,I'm gonna run that thing somehow.CAN'T WAIT,you know?

Re: Got it! Did it! Gonna run it!

Congradulations man! Wow... That must be some bike!

Re: Got it! Did it! Gonna run it!

Thanks,Duck!Well,it is a good bike, but old-looking due to the abuse I've dealt it.(probably more than 11,000 miles on the bike)If it runs really well with this kit I may put a `mirage' paint job on it like MADDOG and STEELTOAD speak of.The kit from Polini came with a reed valve,so low-end power should increase, and that is what I want. When I removed the old piston I checked the rod bearings and they're perfect! The tranny gears are perfect too! The Cosmo Colt I got the engine from only had 200+ miles registered with speedo broken, and I'd bet with my 2000 or so the engine-tranny has little more than 4000 miles. It has needle roller bearing sleeves in both rod ends.I replaced the wrist pin bearing anyway with a new one.I ALSO changed the front sprocket to 13 teeth(it was 12 tooth). So I should cruise at around 35 mph,no problem. How ya' been,Duck? Is your moped running good?I forgot what kind it is.Tell me about it.(:^)

Re: Perfect bearing

Hi Don

The reason moped engine bearings last a lifetime with normal use and care is that they are under stessed for a stock application.

As long as you don't "get on" it all the time. you should have good luck with it.

Jim

Re: Perfect bearing

Yeah,I kinda' figured they were built better than weed trimmers and chainsaws. And I've always been good about making an engine last by warming it up slowly and using the best oil and quality gas with no ethanol. But you know,I've never taken an engine apart that had less wear than this Franco-Morini at the wrist pin.Not even any scuffing on the bearing cage(looked like new). The bike had sat for years and then I put another 2000 or so on it,and the needle bearing looked like new.The lower rod bearing also had no play that I could detect.Must be the 40:1 Pennzoil Marine Synthetic. It's 2.99 at Wal-Mart for 16oz.,and I think it must have been worth it.I WOULD run Amsoil but the price,OH,the PRICE!(:^)

Re: Got it! Did it! Gonna run it!

hey! way to go don! cant wait to see it... i cant believe you have THAT many miles on that thing! that rocks...

im going out to ikes sunday morning.. he's gonna help me with emily's kreidler.. its a 2 speed tranny and something is wack with it.. and i dont wanna risk messing it up!

Re: Got it! Did it! Gonna run it!

Hey,what I suggested to you won't mess it up,Casey.Try it and THEN take it to Ike's.It just might fix it!And my Sebring is nothing special,Casey.I'm sure you'd be disappointed when you saw it.It shows every one of those tough miles! The other Sebring is prettier, but it's only a single-speed Minarelli.Unless you're like me and no moped is ugly, just snails are ugly!Ha,Rog!LOL!! (:^P

Re: Got it! Did it! Gonna run it!

thanks don! okay, youve convinced me.. but i have some questions!

so i should mix 50/50 kerosene and dexron in the gear box, THEN start it? let it run, then drain that back out and refill with dexron?

and should i just fill it to the fill limit with the 50/50 mix? how long should i run it with the mix in there?

thanks don!

Re: Got it! Did it! Gonna run it!

Yeah,Casey,50-50 mix only to the proper fill limit is okay if you only run it on the stand for 5 minutes.Don't throttle it too hard, but rev it a little for gear change if it's a 2-speed.Don't ride it while you have kerosene in it.Then drain it out and replace it.I'd also run it again with the Dexron and drain it out once more to make sure you get all that kerosene out of there. But I had forgotten that Ike has a manual you say?If he's got a manual you can try this or take it to him.A shop manual is a life-saver and a time saver.Re-read my February 3rd posting at 00:58 if you're gonna do the flush. Here's to the great Kriedler moped!Hip,Hip,Hooray!(:^)

Re: Got it! Did it! Gonna run it!

thanks don! yeah, im gonna try it in the morning (im gettin ready to go out of town for the night), but ill poast back and let you know the results!

and ill just meet ike somewhere and pick up the manual from him.. he said i could borrow it to make a copy... THEN if it is still weird, ill take it up there...

im just hoping i can even get it to start.. =]
