ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Just pulled my friend Mark's ZA apart off his Puch Magnum to do a crankshaft install on it. Also did pucks while we were in it. He was VERY lucky that his gears hadn't broken yet.....

If anyone wants to wiki this, feel free. (Lynda?)

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot /

how old were they, or maybe i should ask how many miles?

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Bike is a 1980 and it has about 1100 miles on it.

I checked my pucks when I flipped second and they looked like new. Original pucks with 200 miles. I run them.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

You are now just figuring this out?

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

this may sound like a dumb question, but i might as well ask for future reference. what exactly do the pucks do? and how often to they go bad?

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Ryan, I replace the pucks in every ZA I touch. (about 10 so far) People just think they can run stock pucks and not worry about them, so I posted pictures for them.

Kurt, pucks dampen the impact when shifting from first to second, keeping the teeth on the gears from shearing off. Stock ones go bad after 20+ years, You should be able to replace them with nice aftermarket pucks and never worry about them again!

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

I thought this was common knowledge and everyone did it, my bad.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Bump for ZA love.

Those pucks looked better than mine. Mine had disintegrated and lodged themselves under bearings and all over the place.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

What are those made out of? They look like the rubber used in screen printing squeeges.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Similar, pucks are harder though.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

i like taking the pucks out so it makes the bang sound when it shifts

never had a problem running them like that

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Hmm. I've got an old squeege, I may try to make some for my ZA.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

There's a full tutorial in the wiki that explains ZA50 disassembly/reassembly including puck replacement, although I think there's an improper step in replacing one of the clutches...

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

I think some of the newer pucks are made from delrin or ABS. Some are a little squishier (I would think those are slightly better).

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

i got neato counter sunk allens at fastenal to torque the the puck holder plate back on. they were too long but i ground them nice and flaw w/ angle grinder.

gotta loctite them babies too. i used that 3bond high temp stuff from treatland.

i think pucks just disintegrate after time, sitting in an oil bath. whether yoou ride it or not.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

the dry ones are the ones that disintegrate, when not moved they dry out and get brittle, then detonate on the first shift or first few rides.

that is just how i understood it, now put a Gila on there or a MK 80 and they wont last forever....

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

I just filled mine with jb weld where the puck would go so it will last forever.

Another set of pucks from an engine that had atf in it:

REPLACE YOUR STOCK PUCKS!

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

nd 20 or 30 I bet would help alot instead of atf and how hot does transmisson fluid have to get before its toast. Nice thread! (edited)

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Any way of knowing if pucks are going bad? My za50 shifts great but I think the pucks are original.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Are those the Atomic pucks? Those are the ones I got for my ZA but I haven't put it all back together yet. How do they compare to the more expensive ones by Motion Left Mopeds?

Dude jusr replace them. Theyre 15 bucks of insurance and you wont have to worry about some 35 year old pieces of plastic holding up or failing and destroying your innards

running ATF is for suckers

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

I don't know why people don't replace these... You spend around $150 on an engine and won't spend $15 on something everybody tells you to.

You can't got on how they "look". Replace them - replace them - replace them.

Re: ZA owners: Replace your pucks!!!!

Yeah, those are the atomic pucks. They're nice and squishy. Paz pucks are hard as hell.

If you own a ZA replace your stock pucks. $15, 30 minutes, and 3 drops of loctite will keep you from breaking gears. Its just not worth the risk.

Yeah, its just so simple. Astounds me when people run stock pucks, even on a stock bike. Flip 2nd gear while you're in there too.
