Went on my first ride today,

My face hurts from grinning. I'm in SF, so I went through the Presidio and under the bridge. I was trying to ride up a hill to get out of the park and my poor bike couldn't make it, a cop car passed and gave me one of those "that's real cute, chump" looks.

Made it out eventually, though. I've got a '78 Newport L with a Proma GP and a little foam filter on it with a 60 jet. I'm thinking maybe a larger jet would help me climb those hills- I'm probably about to blow my shit up.

It's super slow off the line, so I'm trying to fix that. Mid-range is amazing fun. Within the next three weeks I'll have the Treats 50cc kit on there, but if anybody has any tips to help off the line I'd be really appreciative.

I love it. I'll try to make it out to a COTL ride soon, but I manage a cafe and I have a pretty hectic schedule.

Ya! Congratulations. I live in SF too, the hills are tricky with a stock bike. I used to have to plan my routes and strategize hitting hills at full speed.

Read up dude. There is a ton of info on this site. Jetting isn't gonna help you climb hills, unless of course your bike is capable of climbing hills and it's jetted improperly.

I've never messed with a Puch, only french bikes with glorious variators. But you should look into upgrading your clutch, a 3-shoe or something from treats. It's lighter, it'll grab at higher rpms = faster off-the-line. You could also throw a kit, which will require lots of tuning, if your new, you may want to wait till your bike is running like a top before you dive into something more complicated. Otherwise, you can port the cylinder. Also, you can change the gearing, for more low-end. This could help if you're primarily riding in the city, and you're say, only getting up to 35 or so before the next stop-light. Gearing for low end sacrifices top-end, and vise versa.

PS- you may have a rough time riding with creatures unless you kit or port your cylinder.

Your first moped ride ever or after a kit? Either way you get to ride in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Way to be!

Re: Went on my first ride today,

There is a moped service shop opening up above SF Moto in the near future (the man says sometime this month). So since I can't do any dremelling right now, I think I'm going to have him do porting and matching for a 50cc kit.

@ Andy-Thanks for the tip on the clutch, I'll pick one of those up in a couple days.

@Zap- 1st ever ever ever.

That's a good idea now that 77' is done. Lots of us dont' have the space, tools, time for some things or extra $$ to risk fucking up an engine. I know David from Treats used to or maybe still does work there, so I'm sure they'll be knowledgeable.

SF Moped

Yeah, here's the link to the dude's blog. He helped me out with a ton of advice before buying. He even offered to help me find a ped in the Santa Cruz area and truck it up. (edited)

You're hooked.

You have a good support system there. COTL and others on this site can help you; or should i say enable you to get your "fix"?

Re: Went on my first ride today,

Yeah I missed the Sunday BBQ, but I'll try and go out next time. Hopefully ride with some other slowpeds until I get my chest hair.
