MPG of a Honda Express

I am trying to find out what a 1981 Honda Extpress gets for Gas Milage. I need to know when I run out of gas!

Re: MPG of a Honda Express

lol.. dont worry... youll know when you run out of gas.... (had to tease sorry)

Re: MPG of a Honda Express

Ya but don't want to do that in the middle of a busy road and walk all the way back.

Re: MPG of a Honda Express

ok.. seroiusly now... a current ebay auction for a 1980 express states that it gets 80 - 100 mpg... hope that helps

Re: MPG of a Honda Express

What you should do is drain your gas tank. The go to the gas station and get exactly one gallon of gas. Fill your tank up. Strap a spare bottle of gas. Run until you've consumed all the one gallon. Then just to get home, use the spare bottle.

Trouble is the '81 holds 0.79 gallons of gas.

There's a Reserve position to the petcock. This gives the engine access to the last little bit of gas in the tank. The idea being that if you forget to check your tank before you go out, it'll remind you before you're completly empty.

Re: Calculating MPG and max distance

You want to find out the approximate number of miles you can ride before you're dry, right? I think this one has been covered, but here it goes:

1. Find out how large is your gas tank (call this T). Jax184 said it was 0.79 gallons but you can verify.

2. Fill up your gas tank to the max. Write down your mileage (call this M1) and keep this safe.

3. Ride for a day or two.

4. Go back and refill your tank to the max. Note how much gas you need to add (call this G1) , and write down your mileage (call this M2) a second time.

Your miles per gallon MPG = (M2-M1)/G1. How long you can theoretically ride D=T*MPG. If you keep a log of when you gas up over a longer period of time you'll get more calculations andtherefore more accuracy. Gas leaks from the tank/petcock invalidate your calculation.

Give yourself less mileage before you fill up, because riding against the wind, riding in cold weather or 2 up riding will give you worse mileage. For example if D=150 miles/kms, then only ride 125 miles/kms before you tank up.

Re: Calculating MPG and max distance

on an express it varies a ton due ot the transmission design.

just plan on 80 miles or so, and plan on refilling it everytime you leave your house.

Re: MPG of a Honda Express

Man that's not very much. A guy on a bicycle with a Chinese 49cc bicycle engine was getting 160 miles to the one gallon tank. I was hoping for at least 100 miles. but it sure beats the hell out of 25 mpg in my PT Cruiser

Re: MPG of a Honda Express

yeah 80 isn't very much you're right.. i mean my stretch hummer limo gets 6 mpg..

Re: MPG of a Honda Express

My cpi hussar is the new generation 2 stroke yami engine and gets 45 km/ltr or around 130miles per gallon, fast too

Last time I calculated my mpg on the Express, I had 64 mpg. I am sure my piston rings need to be replaced and other things tweaked. But then again, 64 mpg is not that bad in my mind considering it's a 26-year-old machine!

Sorry Dany,

I do not know much more than just what information is provided in the manual here.

I hope that information helps you. I do also know that Jax184 has a wealth of knowledge about these machines.

Re: tuning

the express carb is tuned pretty optimistically as it is. My only idea would be to hook up a slightly bigger carburator, if you could find one.

i alwyas had a lot of issues tuning my express.

My gas is leaking out of the pet cock. I need to drive it to its service destination which is 3.3 miles from my house. Is it reasonable to assume that if I only use the reserve tank that it would be sufficient to get me there?
