What do you consider a moped?

I have a yamaha cv80 I am still trying to get working. Now I know that a traditional moped has pedals hence the name MO - PED. But what do other people think moped or scooter? What do call yours. Let me know. I would like to see what others think. I personally call mine a scooter but would be proud to call myself a member of the moped army while riding my "scooter".

Re: What do you consider a moped?

You can't actually be a member of the "Moped Army" no matter what you ride. To be a Moped Army member, there must be an established branch in your area that will accept you as a member, or you have to start your own branch. Neither is easy. And to do either one, you would have to have a moped with pedals. But don't worry about it. Very few members of this forum are members of the Moped Army. You can tell which ones are by the symbols by their name, which indicate which branch they belong to. You can go to the top of the page, click on members, and get a list of all the branches, and the members that belong to them. I own a motorcycle, 2 mopeds, and a scooter. Some people on here don't like scooters, I obviously don't have a problem with them, as long as people don't call them mopeds. My scooter is a Yamaha Zuma, a fairly modern style of scooter. It is good transportation, and is faster than a moped. But to me, there is something special about mopeds. The very first motorized 2 wheelers were mopeds, and they have survived right up until the present day. I consider myself something of a purist where mopeds are concerned. Like most other members of this forum, I have other types of vehicles, and even belong to a couple of other forums for those vehicles. You can be a member of this forum without owning a pedal moped, but you might want to consider getting one sometime, it's a whole different experience than anything else, and makes you a member of an elite group of moped owners and riders. Motorcycles and scooters are everywhere, but real mopeds are few and far between. Welcome aboard. Peace. Jerry.

While I do understand that I would have actually join an established group or start one myself. I was still curious as to what others consider their rides, and while I might not be a member YET. I would still proudly consider myslef a member if the chance came while I was riding a scooter.

I have a '77 Puch Maxi, I took the pedals off, most everyone here does too. I call it a moped, even if I don't pedal. I guess it could be a monoped LOL.

Re: wow!

that actually makes it a 'no-ped,' doesn't it?

i think that the idea is that the only thing preventing it from still being a moped is the lack of pedals, hence "no"-ped(als)

Re: wow!

There are some people ing the branches who openly ride no-peds, or mo-pegs, (myself not one of them) (not that anyone should be ashamed) but really, if your riding a scooter, you know it, and if your riding a moped, you know it in your heart. I think that it really takes A LOT to turn a moped into a scooter... and even more to turn a scooter into a moped. (unles were in germany where the word for scooter is

Re: wow!

actually, in germany the word moped is "motorrad" coming from the "fahrrad" which means bicycle. incedentally, the word for scooter is "scheisse" which means shit. LOL

anyway, i think (personally) that the most important distinction is the under 50cc (pre-mod) motor class.

Re: wow!

In most states a yamaha cv80 wouldn't even be considered a scooter. Most states require 50cc's or less for a moped or scooter so what you have is legally a motorcycle in some states.

And following up on this. You can probably ride faster than any stock moped. If you want to ride with peds don't go blowing them away, just 'cause you can. I think most folk would welcome any small bike to rid with them.

A MO-PED IZzzzzzz.....

.....a bike with a MO-tor and PED-als. If a bike has no pedals it's a NO-PED, or a scooter.

A mo-ped doesn't have to be only 50cc.....it can be any bike with pedals at any cc rating(the first top-tank motorbike was actually a mo-ped). The PEDals are what makes it a MO-PED, not a title the State gives it.

The State calls my Aerostar van a truck, but I know it's just a van. It will never be a truck. don-ohio (:^D

Re: A MO-PED IZzzzzzz.....

Wow thats complicated. Makes me feel lucky. I got my motorcycle license on my 16th birthday, all I had to do was take a simple 25 question written test, and ride a circle around the parking lot. That license allows me to operate ANY motorcycle I want, even the Chevy big block V8 powered Boss Hoss. But don-ohio is correct. The definition of a moped is that it have operable pedals and a motor. If it has those two things, it is a moped, no matter what any government says. An interesting thing about Canada that I noticed, is that the same rules seem to apply nationwide. In the U.S.,every state, all 50 of them, have different rules on mopeds. Peace. Jerry.
