I have a friend who was asking me today, "if there is a way to run a moped without its original key?" I don't know the make or the model, just know that its has no key, but should be in working order.
Thanks

if your friend just means the key to lock the front forks, then not a problem. i don't know of any moped that requires a key to start ... maybe some newer scooters? but i think even most of those have kickstarters.
when i got my honda pa50II, the key was missing.. i DO need the key to start... had to buy a new ignition switch & key from honda..
but i DID hotwire it before i got the new ignition.. try that. should work out well..
what do i need to do to hotwire it?
thanks

just take the ignition out and cross the two wires that go into it..
but make sure he isnt talking abou the fork lock... like miguel said. i dont know of any mopeds besides hondas that use key start along with pedal start.
Well, I havent seen the "moped" it could be a scooter. He saw me workin on mine and asked me about that. I am assuming everything else is in working condition. He talked like it was. Are there just 2 wires going in the ignition?
look at it first ... if it's a moped (w/ pedals) try to start it. it could just be that he's got some other problem he didn't check for.
a lot of mopeds came w/ keys that fit into the forks for a lock. it's nifty, but not steal-proof.
however ... i do remember that the sachs carrier ii did need a key switched to "on" for the engine to start (if i remember right). but that's the only bike i know of. it was a mid-80s model sachs. very nice.
If it is the front fork locks what do i do?
if it's just the front forks lock, and the bike is NOT locked ... no problem at all. the lock is pretty useless anyhow. if it's locked, you can very very easily break it w/ a sharp turn of the handlebars. then your problem is permanently solved (that's why the lock isn't real theft protection).
if for some reason you actually NEED the key to start the bike ... look at rewiring it.
but ... first tell us what model/year bike we're dealing w/. otherwise, it's all just speculation and guessing. give the bike a good look over. tell us all you can. and try to start it. have you tried to start it yet?
A sharp turn to the handlebars won't damage anything? The bike is at my friends fathers house about 3 hrs away. He is suppose to be bringing it in today, we'll see. I will post the make and model as soon as I get it.
