lightening front sproket?

chuck russo (VA) /

i bought a 27 tooth speed sproket for my tomos ped today and my friend noticed how heavy it was and suggested that we drill holls in it or cut out parts of it to lighten it and make it spin up to higher RPMS faster, this is the same friend who tried to start my moped when it wasnt fully put togather and chiped my piston. i figured i should ask befor i go a drill a bunch of holes in it and mess the thing up

Re: lightening front sproket?

My opinion...Try it first, without drilling the holes. I few ounces lighter, most likely, isn't going to make your bike go any faster.

Your first assessment of your friend was correct ... he's an idiot. The difference in

weight between the two sprockets is about the same as if you bring, or forget your wallet while riding, of if you're wearing long pants, or shorts. It doesnt make enough of a difference to justify weakening a perfectly functioning part to get the 0.01 mph difference it might make.

im not really going for a speed increase im hopeing that it will make it accelerate faster

Re: lightening front sproket?

hey steeltoad!!! what happened to your bike? is it siezed? or did the crank shaft die? havent heard from you in a while.

It won't make you accelerate faster.

Christmas+wife+work+2kids = 0 time. I took out the plug, sprayed WD-40, and thats about it. Tried pressing on the pedal a couple of times and still no budge. I'm hoping this weekend to get it all opened up to see. I'll post some pics to show how cool the mods to the bike came out, and how gruesome the damage is.

Chuck, if you want more accelleration (quicker off the line) then what you want is the 25 tooth, 27 is the opposite of what you want.

Chuck,

Any mass which has to be accelerated will have an effect on the rate of acceleration. The sprocket has to increase it's rotational speed as well as adding to the weight of the ped so it has a dual effect on accelleration. Having said all that, you would probably see more increase in accelleration by relieving yourself before riding. In other words, forget it. Your friend has the right idea, in principle, tell him to go and whittle on his own machinery.
