If it's too rich your sparkplug will have a dark color to it (see the spark plug chart in the links section of this page). You will lose some power because there isn't enough air to burn all the fuel correctly.

If it's too lean, your engine will run too hot and will damage parts. If it's running too hot your spark plug will generally have a lighter color (also see the chart).
