Snow tires for peds

Crisis--Cincinnati /

For the sake, of keeping this forum alive, this holliday season....Remember those old school snow tires for cars, that had the little nails sticking out? The one's that gave you great traction, but really messed up dry asfault. Are there any moped tires like that? If not, how could I make some with an old pair of tires. It would be nice to be able to take the ped out in the snow and ice, without fish tailing all over the road! Any suggestions?

Chris,

We have not heard from Ree lately, but he has posted about using chain from the hardware store for winter riding. As near as I can recall, he used flat, brass chain and wound it around the tire and rim in a spiral pattern. I have never tried it but it sounds like it would work and not be too expensive.

I think studs would be difficult because ped tires do not have enough tread thickness to support the studs.

Re: Snow tires for peds

Yeah... Ped tires aren't really thick enough.

The good thing is that you don't have much HP or braking power to break them loose very easily.

Besides.. isn't winter almost over anyway ?

(it was so late getting here.. we really only have about 10 more weeks.. if that).

This is a studded motorcycle tire.

(this pic probably won't load though... we'll see)

Fred,

Easy for you to say. It sucks for those of us who try to ride year round. : )

I think I will go out and shovel snow now.

haha, yeah! thats probably it...

Re: Snow tires for peds

Oh geezus Ron... We've just had the warmest Nov and Dec for a long time... I've been able to ride up till the last 4 or 5 days or so.

You can't complain.

I almost rode on Christmas day (to say I did)... except the bike had been outside and wouldn't start.

Besides.. this dang warm shit is really cutting into my lake riding time.

Shovel snow ???? What snow ??

Fred,

I can't argue with the weather we have had compared to last year. I think I was off two wheels for about a month straight.

I rode on Sunday, but getting caught in the snow scares the shit out of me (besides, I'm out of spare turn signals). My problem is the forecast of another week of snow.

I guess if the roads clear after that I won't be too stir crazy.

As for the ice, you can have all you want, just don't ask for snow. You can go north or west for that.

Re: Snow tires for peds

Canadians, Russkies, Czechs, and Poles all have participated or still do participate in a bizare form of oval speedway racing in which they run big displacement, transmissionless, and brakeless bikes on solid ice. They use a spiked tire for this kind of fun. I don't know where to get them or even if they come in a size applicable to mopeds, but you might try contacting some of the european tire manufacturers. I think JAWAs were the choice machines for this sport so you might try contacting them if they are still around to find out who supplied the tires. Good luck and be safe!

And Fred!

Dave,

I am sure Fred is responding to your post as I type.

Anywhere in the US where the water freezes enough, there are ice races.

Beagle, didn't I start with, "for the sake of keeping this forum alive". Don't mess with me! I get sick really easy in the winter. :) It would still be nice to take short trips around Covington though. Like going to the store or something. And yes, I do ride when it's cold, but not far. I am just not into joy riding when it's freezing. Also, I don't like riding over to Cincinnati when it's cold, because it's kinda far, and downtown between those big ass building, it's freezing! Then I get over there, and by the time I would come home, it's dark. When it's dark, it's even colder! Plus the g money's kinda scare me at night when I am downtown. You know how I feel about dude's with guns and shit. I think the experience that Brian, Amy, Chelsea and I had, kinda gave me this wierd feeling about riding downtown after dark. :) Anyhow, My cookies almost fell off, when me and walker came home from your house that one day when it was cold. I live for the spring and summer on my ped! The cold is good for working on peds in my book.

Re: Snow tires for peds

what experience are you talking about in cincinnati? niggas messing with you?

Re: Snow tires for peds

I was thinkin bout puttin chains on myself. I was tempted today to go out with just the plain ol tires but i was too afraid of dumpin it. I wonder if they make ped tires with treads like a mountain bike. That'd give ya a little more traction.

Re: Snow tires for peds

Don, why did you have to go and put that! I don't agree with the use of the "N" word, and I know your going to say, "they use it, so it can't be racist", but it's not right, especially in the context of which you just used it. Just because it ends in "as" instead of "ers", doesn't make it okay. Anyhow, some crazy maniac jumped out of the darkness and nabbed my friends purse. Brian tried to catch him, and he did. The guy pulled out a gun and pistol whipped the shit out of him. I started to walk over there, and the dude jumped up and put the gun to the back of my head, and tried to take my money. I told him that I didn't have any, and he jetted. That's it. Brian ended up with a fractured skull and a bunch of stitches. Now he has a cool scar on his forehead! I am stuck with feelings that I could have done more to help him. It was an aweful experience to say the least!

Re: Snow tires for peds

Okay,Crisis,I will tell you of my tires.I have very aggressive knobby tires(Cheng Sheng)on one of my Sebrings.I couldn't resist taking it out in the snow the other day and trying them out. They are pretty stable in snow and slushy snow, but not on ice. These tires have such thick cleats that I think a person could fashion some studs into them with some carefully drilled holes and epoxy. You can see similar tires at JC Whitney's.They have given me thousands of trouble-free miles and are still pretty knobby.I would like to try the stud experiment though.Like Ron and Fred,I wouldn't think of doing it(installing studs) on regular moped tires.

Re: Snow tires for peds

Well, after all that, are you going to tell us the race of your assailant?
