Shipping- Again, I know.

I just bought a moped on ebay and the guy said he would ship, but apparantly now that means that I have to arrange everything. He has one guy who will do it for $380 and I don't get it for 3 weeks, which I think is ridiculous- I only paid $510 for the bike itself. The seller doesn't want to build the crate himself, and every crater I called in the area wanted to charge $300 just to crate it and bring it to a forwardair station. (They were also pretty rude) Amtrak HEX is requiring that the moped be crated now, and they said that it would cost around $400 for them to do it. I don't think that the shipper knows how or is willing to disassemble the moped, and I don't know how to reassemble one. I can't seem to find any way to ship it for less than $380, and driving up there myself is not a possibility because I have no car, am too young to rent one, and I have to work and can't take time off right now. Does anyone have any suggestions? They would really help me out right now.

Jane,

Where is it and where are you?

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

It's a Jawa tank-top model. I'm in Atlanta and it's in Chicago. (And I'm not sleeping at night)

Jane,

You might try Griffin Moving and Storage. Allied Van Lines.

He advertises in American Motorcyclist Association Magazine that he has skids to tie bikes down to.

Also, Federal at 800-747-4100.

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Have you paid him yet?

... If you can't come up with a solution you can deal with... then contact the seller again and ask if you can back out of the deal.

Then he can contact the next lower bidder and sell it to them instead.

If you haven't paid yet and you don't mind a "bad feedback' on ebay... then you could back out even if he doesn't agree.

Forward Air is the cheapest shipper... but it has to be crated and delivered to the Airport.

This is why when a buyer says "he won't ship" or "won't crate" are jerks... and you shouldn't even bid on the stuff... shipping then, costs waaaaay too much.

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Anyway you go it won't be cheap. Forwardair is the least expensive part and should cost less than $100 from Chicago to Atlanta. The expensive part is getting someone to crate it and take it to Forwardair.

Try this, find a MBE (Mail Boxes Etc) near the seller http://mbe.com/ and see what they would charge to put it in an oversized cardboard box on a pallet and deliver it to Fowardair Chicago.

Another option is check with people you know in Atlanta and find out if any of them work for companies that would have trucks coming from Chicago to Atl and see if they would be willing to put the bike on the truck and you pay the driver $100.

Also see if the seller knows of any motorcycle shops or scooter shops in his area that would be willing to prepare it for shipping and use their carrier to ship it. You might get a lower overall cost through them.

Good luck and don't let them get you down, remember Scarlett O'Hare was from Atlanta.

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

I think forward air is 125 if you get it strapped to a pallet......

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Jane! I just saw that moped on E-bay and you stole it! Only 351 original miles!Beautiful! Normally I would side with Fred on this,IF it was a regular type used Jawa. But you've GOT to get this bike shipped by hook or crook.Work hard on it Jane, using these guy`s suggestions. That bike is woprth 300 to ship!I normally walk away from Jawas, but that one reminds me of a sweet Puch MKII or Motobecane Sebring.I would love to help if I could.BYE!

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Guys, you wanna see a steal in progress?Go to E-bay and hit completed items under moped and click to Dec.13th ,10:23.You'll see why I want her to pay extra shipping! Hubba,Hubba!

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Rather than build a crate, perhaps you can talk the seller into visiting a new motorcycle dealer near his house. He will surely find crates they are throwing away. All he needs to do is put the moped inside and drive it to Forward

Air.

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Thanks,Sailor! Good pic work! What do you think of Jane's find?I hope she can complete the deal.

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Thanks for the advice- The seller contacted some bike and motorcycle shops and said they didn't have any leftover crates, so after 3 days of calling around and trying to make arrangements, I went with the original $300 guy. (He lowered his price to $325 because it's going to take longer than normal b/c of the Christmas holidays.) I can't wait to get it. =)

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Jane, Where is the bike? and where are you?

Damn Jane, that's great that the sellar came down on the price for you. Sounds like a nice person to me.

Re: Shipping- Again, I know.

Actually, it was the shipper who came down on the price of shipping. ($380 to $325) The price of the bike itself wasn't reduced.

Re: It WILL be worth it!

Let me tell you about the one I let get away.

It was a '78 Peugeot I picked up around 1990 for $125. It was the guy's wife's ride to college. They were an older couple in a nicer neighborhood. The moped didn't run and he wanted to get it out of his garage, where it was always kept. It was like new except for dust and light rust on the rims, but it only had 750 or so miles on it. Owners manual and title included.

Like a fool I got it running and sold it for $200!

Deals like this pop up once in a blue moon.
